And no sooner had we played the team with a serious MF (Ok, I still don't get Rabiot, bu he obviously functions!) and a freewheeling No 8 (who is not even No 8) than we hit the wall.
If we can press the opposition into a quick turnover or overpower them on the wings, we win. But when there is necessity to continuously apply pressure in the MF and build it from there, we just fail. We are actually totally opposite to Spain, they wrestle control from everybody, but they cannot score.
Southgate either hates playing MF or he doesn't have clue how.

Agreed. I can see the argument for and against him staying, but I think some of the stick he is getting here and in the wider culture is so unfair. We played the current world champions, a better team with the best player in the world, and were a missed penalty away from who knows what. He'll always have my respect, and he's a victim of his own success if everyone things the England job is just about waltzing in, playing some attacking football, and winning it all.

We need to stop viewing that as success and start viewing any less than that as failure. His record in major tournaments is par for the course at best IMO. Only Germany last Euros is arguably a knockout game we weren't favourites for and, given their atrocious record at major tournaments, that's debatable.

My issue with Southgate, and why I think he has to go, is that it's taken him half a decade to realise that England should be playing a positive style with 4 at the back and that our best players should be given creative freedom... something that almost every England fan has been saying for years. How has it taken him so long to come to this incredible revelation?

FA are concerned that Southgate is thinking of leaving, not a chance in hell, the man has no shame, thick skinned is not in it. Get rid now and save yourself some money, rather than sacking him later.

My legitimacy hear to back Southgate up may be thin as I am neither Englishman nor live in England, but I simply find this majority view to fire him a bit strange.

Results are good, consistency is there – we, City supporters, should know better than anyone, that winning a tournament as stacked as Euros or World Cup (or UCL for instance) is not always a matter of elite coaching/selection, to some extent is about luck, few particular moments like we witnessed ffs at Bernabeu last season (and few incredibly unlucky moments at Etihad, where we should already seal the deal). The real objection it to compete with the best and Southgate’s England made it – my feeling was they were better organised against Italy and they were better organised against France (btw best match for me during this World Cup in terms of level of quality). They were challenging the best teams for real, objection has been met.

Nature of selector in national team is a bit different than a nature of being a coach in club-football. We all know that, but when we skip the obvious things, than we might loose the weight of various factors in final judgment. Southgate represents Your country in a way and I struggle to describe it in another way, than hes doing brilliant job. Moreover the most important part hear is, that main job of „selector” is to create a good mentality and vibes within players from different clubs. This aspect is often more important than coaching itself, especially since most of players are under best wings at daily basis. I believe nobody argues, that players are happy with Gareth, who was able to overcome natural conflict of interests of many players aspiring to start games.

Counter arguments do not convince me either. When speaking about best line up for a given game or best subs during a game, I believe we (supporteres) like to skip a fact, that at the end we often do not have as proper info as coaches, staff, we do not see a real state of players during training etc., ability of realising given tactics and so on. Those facts are nothing less, but a real ground for a judgment and decision. However I admit it sounds boring

There is also a very tricky argument, that Southgate would have never get a PL club job. I do not think its true and authors of those comments will probably find out about it in the future, but again - how the hell are You able to state this without a doubt as an accurate?

A caller made a pretty valid point thst Southgate is really just an English Ole Gunnar Solsjaer.
Exactly right in my opinion, Southgates getting a free ride when he should be getting asked some awkward questions about his negitivity and inability to utilise a very good crop of players.

Which is probably where the heart of the disagreement now lies. I am of the opinion that in knock-out tournament elite football all you can do is get there or thereabouts and hope for the bit of luck, edge, or ruthlessness that you need to win the whole thing. I suspect the final quality is the quality that some will say Southgate lacks, and maybe the next manager will come in and prove me wrong and you right, but there had been many, many managers before him with a better pedigree who didn't achieve what he has done.

Kompany has done fantastic so far. But any comparisons to the style of football they are playing this season to how they played to survive in the Premier League are worthless. They actually played a decent brand of football last time they got promoted. But Dyche knew on their budget it would only get them a one way ticket back to the Championship if they tried that game against Premier League teams with the ability of players he could afford.
