FA confirm Southgate will stay on until after Euro 2024 (p 101)

Okay, this needs to die. Spain won the Euros in 2008, before Pep went to Barcelona. Luis Aragones introduced their playing style, and when Del Bosque replaced him after the Euros, he carried on where Aragones left off. Pep had very little to do with it. As for Germany, Low got them to the 2008 Euros final, then the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup and 2012 Euros before he won the final, so you could argue that he had a squad that was building towards a tournament win. Pep is obviously an excellent coach, but there is no need to exaggerate his influence.
In both cases there was a clear core of players from Barcelona and Bayern respectively. Also playing style was clearly inspired. I cannot see how you can dispute that.

He doesn’t have the best midfielders at his disposal. Certainly not ones to match France’s. It comes down the belief as well. I never expect England to win these games. I don’t know how far that permeates the country’s psyche.
Yes but this was a French team with 5 first choice players missing. I think it's more about the way we are coached, for example at one point in the match the commentator pointed out that Walker had tried to go forward to support an attack and the manager ushered him back.

For me that summed up Southgate completely - more worried about what the opposition might do if they got the ball than what we can do when we have it. It's obvious this is how they're being told to play. The problem is it doesn't work and he doesn't learn from the mistakes. He either won't change it or doesn't know how to.

So you who covers left back and who offers more in the air than Maguire?

It’s not exactly a bright idea to concede even more chances than you create at that point.
nope, you're absolutely right, of course - let's stick with the same tactics that have proved so successful over his tenure. I won't post the quote attributed to Einstein.

I see your point, but the problem is Maguire doesn't create anything, he only plays the ball sideways or back, or punts it upfield. Another player would carry it forward. He's not the greatest defender either, remember this is a player that couldn't even get into united's first team. Time somebody else at least got the chance.

And yet one sub won a penalty and another was inches away with his freekick.

I'd love to see what tactics you have up your sleeve that he could have tried with the players at his disposal.

They were both tired and Saka was carrying a knock. They were becoming less effective before he took them off.

Mount won a penalty off the bench.

The only issue with the subs is that they came too late.

Why would you take off your left back when you haven't got anyone to play in that position and defend against a fast winger?

Or the biggest aerial threat at set pieces.

Only bitters think like that.
Tired? These are top class professionals, not Sunday league players. If you're chasing the game and it's shit or bust you don't take two attacking players off because you're worried about defence. But then that's part of Southgate's problem to start with.

Could have changed things much earlier, and for me a panicky defence was screaming out for somebody like Grealish to go and have a run at them.

I'm sure you would.

He's a centre back, it isn't his job to create. Bobby Moore used to punt it up field.

He's an excellent carrier of the ball out from defence and only John Stones is better than him as far as English defenders go. But you can only do it if there is space to go into.

He packs pace and has a poor turning circle and has been caught out stepping in to midfield in the past.

It was the right call to go with him this tournament because no one stepped up in an England shirt to take his place. Coady and Dier are both troubled by same lack of pace.

Quicker partners for Stones like Tomori and Guehi should get an opportunity to stake their claim now.

Yep, I would agree with that. Either way, it worked. What Southgate's England do clearly does not.
