You are right of course but according to this report when they played them last season they also took around 50 fans. And to be fair to them they took a huge 200 to their recent away trip to Doncaster, a huge round journey of circa 150 miles https://salfordnow.co.uk/2023/11/18/salford-city-slump-to-third-defeat-in-a-week-against-gillingham/

You get expenses rather than wages, that is how it worked. There were 4 divisions under the Conference: NPL NPL1 NWC1 NWC2 (later 80s) and most players got something.

I'd bet a fair proportion of those going away were fans before the current owners turned up. Or are rags local to the home side.
