Fabian Delph

Perhaps our much slagged off transfer people, were better than theirs & got him tied up first ?

Quite possible, but when you compare the price being quoted in the media with the prices paid for England players of late, it does seem to be considerably below par. Presumably all parties will be happy with the deal, however. I wonder if we might loan youngsters in their direction in the coming months.

No idea if this signing will work out or not but he is getting some stick over his loyalty comments from a journo with the promise it will be revisited a lot in the media so on that basis welcome to City Fabian

I do look at theirs. I think Silva, Yaya & even Nasri at his best, plus Fernandinho, are as good or better than most we come up against, but largely underperformed last season. I think we are a huge class above Chelsea in that regard. They managed to win the league by being more efficient, not better at football.

Barca passed us off the park, but the main difference between the two teams was how they could close us down with only 3 in midfield & the fact they have Messi, plus Suarez & Neymar. Their whole team was much quicker than ours to close down though. We had one player in our squad who is good at that. Fernandinho. Now we have two. If we sign Pogba, he will improve that energy aspect more than he improves our passing. We already pass it, when on form. Yaya is better at it than Pogba. But we lack balance. Delph helps give us balance in the squad, whoever else we sign.

And we will still not win the Champions League next season whatever, imo. The new players will need time. We will give it a good go in the Prem though.

Disagree, I don't think our midfield is ready to really challenge Barcelona and Real, it's arguably our weakest are, and I'm not sure the signing of Delph does much to bridge the gap. As a say, his price was cheap, but I have reservations over whether or not he's good enough for us.

With Shaw going for £30m, Downing and Carroll for a combined £55m, Lallana for £25m and City are hoping £40 while Liverpool are hoping for £50m on Sterling, £20m for Henderson...it's astonishing that we may have landed Delph for £8m, what a bit of business that is!

I actually quite like Delph, but bloody hell we're going to get some stick off the rag cunts, I can already hear them singing "We signed Schweinsteiger, you signed Fabian Delph" ala our Berbatov/Aguero chant.

I just hope Pogba's good enough IF we get him - I have a bad feeling that our midfield is going to look incredibly average next season.

Delph has the legs, but very very little footballing intelligence. He's an upgrade on Fernando, which is a positive, and with hard work could possibly come close to Fernandinho, but that's a big ask. Overall a good Squad player, but he's a downgrade on both Lampard and Milner in terms of instant quality. Also, I've seen Pogba play 4 times for Juve, and 3 times for France, and I'm still waiting to see him have a good game.

I may get a lot of abuse for what I'm about to say, but in terms of instant quality I'd rather have Wilshire... Even though he is a prick.

Has anyone who's watched both of these players a lot got words of encouragement? I feel like we're buying marketability with Pogba, and just meeting a quota with Delph.

I think 'solid' sums up this signing.

He'll graft harder than most and hopefully help to drag us over the line in those difficult away games.

The price makes this a no brainer.

I agree. At the reported price, it's rather surprising that other suitors were not in for him, as surely his agent would have made the 'get out clause' known.

Perhaps our much slagged off transfer people, were better than theirs & got him tied up first ?
Not to mention the fact that the clause was only triggered by clubs in Europe which reduced the interested clubs enormously. Chelsea and Arsenal for starters wouldn't have been able to fit him in anywhere.

Hadn't appreciated that point. Did that apply only to teams in CL or UEFA too?

Don't know bud, it is only rumoured I might add but seems to be accepted fact. It's the only thing that makes sense of the £8mill buy out clause really.

Don't know if this has been posted earlier in the thread, but found this interesting, especially in light of some of the negative comments in this thread.

Proof That New Man City Signing Will Walk Into First Team

Can Delph succeed where other Englishmen have failed?
Sabotage 19 hours ago

The bookies have suspended betting on Fabian Delph joining Manchester City and he could be an Englishman who succeeds at the Etihad.

Micah Richards has revealed that his new Aston Villa team mate, Fabian Delph, has asked about life at City following reports linking the 25-year-old with a move away from Villa Park. Delph's concerns understandably revolve around the amount of first-team football he'd get.

Opta-powered fantasy football game Oulala have released stats that will reassure the England international that first-team football at Manchester City is very likely, should his move to the Etihad transpire.

Of the five key criteria analysed, the 25-year-old comfortably outperformed Manchester City regular, Fernandinho, despite playing fewer Premier League games than the Brazilian last season.

Delph made more successful passes per game than Fernandinho (49.4 to 45.8) in the Premier League, enough that would have in-fact had him rank third in the entire City squad last season, behind only Yaya Toure and David Silva.

With 1.2 key passes per game to Fernandinho's 0.8 and 1.3 chances created per game to 0.9 from the Manchester City midfielder, Delph shone further.

Both players tallied three assists each while Delph held a further advantage defensively, successfully completing 48.5% of his attempted tackles to just 35.5% from the Brazilian.

After watching the likes of James Milner and Jack Rodwell fail to hold down a place in the Manchester City first team, Delph's concerns are understandable. However, looking at the numbers he has nothing to worry about.

First-team football awaits you, Fabian.
