A lot of you seem confident that next season will be a two horse race between you and Chelsea, and United will get left in the dust fighting for third or fourth. Assuming we (I'm a United fan) sign Fabregas, what would your honest opinions be of the top three squads in comparison with each other?
He's a great palyer but I still don't think he would be enough. Your midfield is weak as are your CB's. Unless you upgrade them you aren't winning anything. Won a very poor PL last year because of Fergie. Had an awful defence last year and Rio is another year older and he and Vidic can't play regular due to injuries. Without Fergie this squad isn't a title winning side.
Agreed. I think we'll need a defensively able box-to-box De Rossi-esque player, someone with a presence, as well as a player such as Fabregas, if we're really to harden our midfield.
Disagree on your point about the CB's, I think that's one of our strongest positions. Injury proneness was and might be an issue there, though - playing Carrick at CB at the start of last season being an example. Ferdinand, while not half of what he was, is still a very capable centre half, but we'll be seeing a lot more of Jonny Evans in place of him. Vidic is still a top player, and I think it's more his presence on the pitch that effects the game more than his actual ability as a defender, in terms of both moral of his team mates and intimidating the opponent.
Thing is, we've got no CB's in their prime, we've got two capable young'uns in Jones and Smalling, a lad who's not far from his prime in Evans, and two aging but still effective players in Ferdinand and Vidic, so in that sense you make a reasonable point - it's probably why we're supposedly in for Garay.
