Fan perception of our forward players

Yes only focuses on league and champions league games
Ok but if we could dig a little deeper we’d get a more accurate picture. A home game against Norwich where we’re two up after ten mins is different than a tight away game at Chelsea. Grouping them all into one big lump might ne misleading.

Fair enough, I know its a bit old fashioned but I prefer to see if a players any good by watching them play rather than studying loads of multi coloured charts & reading loads of stats :)

For me it is the mixture of both that is best. Both - statistics and the own view - can be misleading especially as we often focus only on the ball and the commentator (and his views) influences us even if we think he does not. I often watch my Bayern matches first from German TV or Sky Go stream - and later in the week (partly) again with a copy I get from the rojadirecta.me page in English - and just remark how much mainly watching just the ball game first influenced me and that the different commentator who emphasizes things differently plays a part in this, too.

And I look at different stats pages that have different categories. That Fernandes guy at Manchester United might have a lot of key passes - but it is not really surprising that he rarely assists as he only has an xA per open play key pass of 0.09. In comparison to this KdB had an xA per open play key pass of 0.20 and 0.21 in 18/19 and 19/20 (this year only 0.13 and that partly explains why he does not assist as usual). Yesterday Fernandes e.g. had 7 key passes - but only a cumultative of 0.33 xA from all key passes - the highest a 0.09 (probability for a goal 9%!) for a shot from Sancho. More xA than 0.3 is a big chance.

And - even if we e.g. often only judge e.g. offensive players for their offensive stats - it is often other categories like their pressing, their runs without the ball etc. that are equal important.

At the end you need both to judge a player - but it is probably not the usual stats but additional stats, too.

A players contribution is more than just touches, passes, shots etc. Emily Heskey used to get dogs abuse for being shite by folk that watched him on tv play for England or them dippers or wheover - but if anyone watched him live you’d see, that without the ball, he was always dragging defenders into places they didn’t want to be - opening up space for others.

This is something my son talked about after attending his first city game 10 years ago. He used to spout fifa stats and talk like football was a computer game all day and night, it was only when seeing the full picture at a game, the movement off the ball, the whole team shape as transitions took place - that’s when he realised what football was really about (that and getting in quickly for the chips).

His favourite player ? Silva old, now new silva.
