I was having a debate with a mate of mine the other day about how I think that fans and supporters are different in a large way.

My depiction of a fan is someone who say's they have a favourite team but during the hard times constantly slag the players and managers picking at little things.

Whilst supporters they get behind the team during the good and the bad taking it game by game.

This came up as I was trying to say he's a fan not a supporter of City as he's constantly slagging the whole club off everytime we loose and I just try taking the possitives out the game.

Just wondering if anyone else has ever tried comparing the two or am I just complicating things??

I agree.

My view is that a fan is short for fanatic but isnt that bothered about going to games etc....

But a supporter is someone who supports the club in more than saying they are a fan. e.g supporting the club financially aswell like buying season tickets, merchandise, tickets for away games, tickets for home games etc....

Yer can't be a fan/fanatic and not be bothered. I think it's the other way round. The fans are the ones who travel the world, turn up at the matches, have the season tickets, buy the shirts. The supporters are the ones who say Manchester City when asked who they support. Their support doesn't venture far from verbal support or argument if challenged by other fans or supporters.

For me,

Fan is someone that will watch some games on tv and be happy if they win. In the same way that I'm a fan of Mclaren and the English F1 drivers.

A supporter is someone that organises there time around their club like next weekend. My lady is taking me to the lakes for a dirty birthday weekend but didn't tell me til today when I informed her it was fine but for the fact that I would leave the hotel for most of Saturday to go watch us play b burn, which caused a huge argument I won.

Show off...I've seen the pics of your missus...;- )

Seriously though, I've a similar problem...I'm taking the good lady to the Philippines for Christmas and New Year to celebrate her finishing her PHD...however she was more than a little disturbed last night when I started ringing hotels to check what kind of cable they have and whether they will be showing the premier league while I'm over there...

Thankfully managed to find a top notch room with flat screen tv, cable, the works...and a view of the beach...so I can lie in bed and watch the footy while she lies on the beach...

...she complained about it until I hit her hard with "listen. either we do it like this, and I don't miss any City games, or we don't go. it's up to you..." She soon went back to just being delighted to have such a cool and generous boyfriend...

Interesting question about fan v supporters...

haha good man!

fan - someone who is proud of their team no matter the result, they have pride and passion always no matter what, everything is irrelevant.

supporter - someone who isn't as bothered about watching their team as much as a supporter but makes a good effort, someone who easily picks holes, basically someone who can come away from a game winning yet still moan, someone who will come out after a game when their team has lost and be laughing and joking, if i'm honest when we get beat at home i rarely see anyone coming out the stadium smiling or laughing, everyone looks depressed.

put it this way, i know at least 15 city supporters and about 50 fans, all 15 of the supporters haven't been to a game in years, not saying people who don't go aren't bothered, there's complications with everyone, but i thought i'd just point it out.

fans are fans, but theirs a slight difference IMO.

you aren't a proper fan of city if you don't come away from the CoMS without a headache :)

Haha, good man. Sometimes we men just have to help women realise what's important I think and I agree it is a great question in the OP.
