Ok, convince me.
I specifically think for Smoke, the solo RB conjured for the studio version he doesn’t manage to attain live here (bit like Jimmy on Song Remains album), and Gillan’s vocal and the solo on Child In Time (understandably too) don’t match the studio versions. Do you think the versions of these two on Japan are better?

I prefer the live version of smoke to the studio one (more meat to the riff) but I'm not too concerned about comparisons to studio versions as to whether they are great live albums.

The playing generally on MIJ is wonderful.

Anyway I'm sure we've had live threads before and I've posted this list before:

There’s that and I think some film of what looks like an outdoor gig in France that are incredible. Got an old tape of Radio1 broadcast of 60 mins of the Hammy Odeon show of that tour.
Agree 100%, they really were off the scale live that year. Cheers for posting it!

Absolutely, their Double Trouble Live would be in my top 10 if not top 5 live albums.
You may have posted it before but cheers for putting that up pal - a few on there that I haven’t heard much of, so a good prompt to try out some new listening over next couple of weeks :-)
Re your original comment, fair enough, it’s just that that was what the OP was referencing in the OP, how the live versions were better than their studio counterparts.

Yeah, saw the opening comment but it didn't seem to be asking for just tracks that were better than the original. That would be true though of the first Kiss live album :-) which had a far better producer than the studio albums that preceded it; although there was much overdubbing so it's almost a studio recording.

Some great shouts in there and you’re first to mention Rory. A fantastic live album. (Check out 1975 Rory at My Father’s Place, Roslyn on YouTube. Performance wise it equals it)
First to mention Tull. Bursting out is brilliant.
Rush. All the world’s a stage. Brilliant.

The 70’s during the oil crisis was a big big time for the live album because vinyl was dear due to the petroleum scarcity and recording a live concert was seen as a cheaper way of getting a product out.

I’d put Live Rust by Neil Young in there too.
Seconds Out- Genesis, superb.

A bit later but Absolutely love Stop Making Sense, but I really need to see the concert also, to totally immerse myself in the experience.
 
Some seriously good Live albums mentioned on this thread which as the OP has me questioning my original post, Alchemy live must be up there possibly number one, Knopflers Sultans of Swing is quite brilliant as a guitarist.
