Favourite non English language film

City of God, infact going to watch it tonight, anybody seen City of Men? the sequel i think

jeez, well, yep, good stuff as per usual on these threads.

saw Das Boot again for the first time in years, it's simply fantastic on big(ish) screen as opposed to a battered old VHS tape.

the kurosawa films just get better every time I see them. whatever you do, don't stop at Seven Samurai. Yojimbo and Rashomon are the next to see. Then you've got Derzu Uzala, Red Beard, Ikiru, The Lower Depths, Those who step on the Tiger's tale, the low key non-samurai masterpieces... finish off with the late period tragic, almost entirely humourless samurai epics Kagemusha and Ran.. On the one hand, he changed the times and the times he lived through changed him... on the other, he just got old, miserable. but he always cared, always wanted to show us something about ourselves, even if it was how we are all destined to fuck it up for ourselves and everyone else, it's hard to argue he of all people didn't have the right to make such a statement in his final days. wow, err, going on a bit there...

some other true classics that haven't been mentioned;

Underground <a class="postlink" href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114787/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114787/</a>
absurd slapstick take on the history of the 'yugoslavian nation'

Persona <a class="postlink" href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060827/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060827/</a>
lynch before lynch, only much more minimal, and as such, hard hitting.

Il Conformista <a class="postlink" href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065571/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065571/</a>
slightly different subject matter but similair in scale and accomplishment to the godfather

La Regle de Jeu <a class="postlink" href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0031885/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0031885/</a>
brilliant natural realisation of various classes of people interacting as people always have, always will, caught in a situation not of their making

Stalker <a class="postlink" href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079944/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;">http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079944/</a>
sci-fi, a journey into mystery and chaos

Saw Nordwand (North Face) last month... I thought it was outstanding.

Not been right through the many pages of thread so this might have received plaudits already but, SEVEN SAMURAI it's an absolute classic and much more subtle and indeed believable that the rip-off western 'the Magnificent Seven'.
If you've not seen it then imagine all the good stuff from the Magnificent Seven (plot line, character dynamics, subject matter etc.) and SEVEN SAMURAI is like that only better . .
