Favourite opening day matches and memories?

As a 9 year old I was hyped for our first division 1 game I could remember.

Not sure I’ll ever have the build up to that game ever again, but we lost at the dippers 3-1.
Yes I was 13, at the time, and felt exactly the same. From memory we played quite well, on the day and from a child like logic I presumed we would do well for the rest of the season. Southampton at home, 3 days later made me realise we were in trouble.

12 at the time . Remember walking passed a boozer on the way to the ground with our kid and hearing the slowest and most pissed up walk on i`ve ever heard in my life ! We were in that little corner section for away fans and it was packed . Thr guys on the gate were accepting cash and allowing fans to jib over the turnstile . Remember we had a good following over in the opposite corner in the standing paddock .
Roasting hot day, Brian Kidds debut away section dangerously packed. Behind twice came back to draw 2 2. Lovely run home through the peak district, great day.

West Ham away 2007 as many have mentioned was probably the best as it really felt like it was a new start after a pretty bleak 18-24 months.

Blackburn away 2009 was good as it was like a new team, Newcastle at home under Pellegrini too felt like a new start after a shit end to the previous season, West Brom 3-0 in 2015 also pretty good when Kompany scored and stood on the advertising boards in front of the away fans.

Any of them over the past 5 years have been pretty great apart from Spurs last season. Brighton, Arsenal, West Ham. In fact, we don't play at home much on the first game do we?!

Last season at Spurs. Not the best result but some positives in other ways.

First chance to see their stadium and it was about getting back to some sort of normality after the lockdowns.

WHU away first PL game, tickets on sale tomorrow Wednesday 9 am 26,000 points £25 - £30.

Think it was the first game of the season . The evening game vrs Leicester at home and Barney Daniels got a few . We were front row in the North stand that night . Sure we won 3-1 .
I think your memory is playing tricks, mate.

Barney scored 2 v Leicester, yes, but it was in November (1974). And we won 4-1 (check players' records on our home page.) Daniels never played on an opening day.

In the last nine seasons, we’ve only been scheduled to be at home on opening day twice and one of those (Villa in 2020) was postponed so it’s only actually happened once.

Poor performance though, on the pitch and, especially, in the stands... I know being in the sun usually has a soporific effect, but that wasn't good.
