Centre forwards that do their job. Fowler in his pomp, Shearer, Crespo, Andy Cole, you get my drift.
lineker, van nistlerooy, raul, defoe, baros to add.

I love the playmakers that no amount of coaching can turn the modern 'athletes' into. They are often not even quick, they are just blessed with pure footballing ability - Ali Benarbia, Eyal Berkovic, Wesley Sneijder, Alonso and their ilk. Those that 'pull the strings'.

Saying that, I wouldn't class Gio as such a player but I loved him more than anyone. He was too good to pass it to anyone else.

As in Milan Baros?! If you mean someone else then I apologise but pretty sure any Liverpool or Villa fan will tell you that Milan Baros doesn't deserve to be mentioned with any of those other players. He's a head down, run in to trouble merchant. Did have a great tournament at Euro 2004 but aside from that a very average player. His goal record isn't exactly prolific.

I like players who are strong on the ball, can receive the ball to feet or into the channels, who can run at defenders with the ball at pace, or are skilful enough to beat defenders in tight situations. Players who have a winning mentality, give 100% for the cause, and score goals for fun. Players with vision who can play a killer ball, and who tend to produce in high profile games, or when games are tight. Players who thrive on pressure and despite being extremely gifted have an excellent team ethic. Basically, I like Carlos Tevez.

Many might disagree but one of my favourite players to watch in the premiership is Frank Lampard. He's not the all action midfielder with bursting runs with the ball at his feet like Gerrard can be but his use of the ball is outstanding and up there with the best. What he does with ease is create space for himself and is always available for a pass, his movement when he doesn't have the ball is outstanding and he can influence matches without doing easy on the eye things such as beating a man with a bit of skill

Of course there are players out there who have probably more skill than Lampard but in terms of his football brain and use of the ball he's outstanding and i enjoy watching him play apart from against us of course

Agreed. Still one of the best all round performances I have ever seen against us a couple of seasons back, he was great to watch.

Nice thread by the way

Don't get me wrong, the likes of Messi could, in a few years, have an excellent argument to be the best ever. But I still wouldn't see him as as much of a 'pure' footballer as Zidane.

I've got to disagree with this one matey.

I don't think anybody in the modern game will ever have the impact or the talent of Maradona. A mixture of Messi, Tevez and Aguero all rolled into one. I still love watching his videos on Youtube, and my nephews (8 and 6) now shun those freestyling fake videos by Ronaldinho to watch Maradona.

As I said in a different thread, Maradona used to beat the whole defence and then take it around the keeper, which nobody seems to do any more. He could pass 50 yards, had unballeevable teckers, and could score from anywhere. It's still a joy to watch him, 20 years after his prime.

I know exactly what you mean mate and Maradona is still the best I've seen in my life time...BUT....I honestly think Messi has as much God given talent as Maradona and will go on to be remembered on a par with him.

I like the Tevez comparison because Maradona was as strong as an Ox and if he wanted to stay on his feet then there was no stopping him. However, despite Messi being slighter than Maradona, he stays on his feet a hell of a lot more. Maradona was a diving little twat to be fair.

If Messi has a good World Cup he's really up and running.
