Argentina 78 Kempes ardiles tikka tape billowing down the stadia.
First one I remember and as you say it was amazingly exciting for a 9 year old - the tickertape, the long hair and longer taches, the commentary which sounded like it was coming from a pay phone, the unfamiliar kits and exotic names. A time before the internet when you knew little or nothing about the teams until they kicked off. Global stars were made overnight. Kempes, Cubillas.
Scotland’s disastrous opening, Willie Johnson failing a drug test and the first time I ever saw fans giving their own manager shit, yet they were almost saved by Gemhill’s wondergoal
I actually knew a bit about Poland, semi finalists at successive tournaments, as our neighbours were Polish and they regaled us for years with stories about Deyna, Lato and Tomaschevski. Another brilliant but unlucky side.
That said, I probably enjoyed Espana 82 more as I was old enough then to really appreciate it. Rossi’s redemption and that Brazil side, up there with Cruyff’s Netherlands as the best team not to win it

Germany 2006 - only because it’s the first one where I was old enough to watch it with mates in the pub. I was at university then and my main memories are of spending all day in student bars getting sloshed watching the footy. Fantastic memories.

After that, probably Russia 2018 if I’m honest. Seeing Southgate restore a bit of positivity, it was great from that standpoint.

Everyone says Italia 90 but I don’t remember anything about it, I was three years old.
