Currently having an argument with a stupid woman in work. She is adamant that she has been told that NASA have had astronauts jump from SPACE before now, miles higher than Felix did.

I cannot find any refeence to this on Google to disprove her, all results come back to this weeks jump. Am I right (sure I am) in saying that she is wrong and NASA have never had a jump from space.

As far as I know this would not be possible due to the extremes involved and that we can only jump from as high as Felix did this week.

i think the elevation of jump could be increased. as you rise into the Ozone layer the temperature increases therefore the speed of sound increases aswell. im not sure as which point the air density becomes so thin that its bascailly zero...

A yank called Colonel Joseph William Kittinger II did it in the 60's and still holds the record for the longest freefall. I think he oversaw Felix's jump the other day as well.

I know all this and I have explained it until I am blue in the face, but she just keeps mouthing off saying that NASA have done it before and from higher up. I give in. She cannot even have a reasonable answer other than "I have been told this and believe what I am told". Despite not being able to provide any proof she is adamant she is right.

Fucking women. Even when you prove they are wrong they still have to argue the toss until you punch them in the mouth!

It wasn't an astronaut it was a cow. It was immortalised in song.

Hey diddle diddle
The cat and the fiddle
A cow jumped over the moon
And burnt up on reentry

what happened to the ballon and capsule? presumably it went higher as its lighter... oh, there's no air higher up!... help!

The capsule was released and came down by parachute but I have wondered about the balloon myself. I suppose it will eventually deflate and land like all the weather balloons. I see another Roswell conspiracy when it lands.

I'm sure they said that they could release the helium remotely to allow the ballon to drop to a safe altitude then land by parachute. The capsule had a crumple zone on the bottom like in cars, to allow a slow crash landing.

Yes that would make sense. I forgot the balloon had some gas released to steady the altitude so they would probably do that.

I still like the idea of it landing in remotest Dorset and getting all the local hippies worked up.

edit.

he was not the first either.
