Done a lot of the wainwrights since the eighties, have all the little guide books. coincidentally walked past the house he was born in today, it has a blue plaque on the front, which usually is a recognition of someone who has made a significant contribution to British life, either culturally or scientifically, i think he has.

I finished all 214 Wainwrights last weekend. My last was Halin Fell near Ullswater. Thinking about my next challenge. I'm definitely going to do the Pennine Way in the Spring. I was thinking of finishing the Munros. I stopped doing those about 30odd years ago when I started rock and ice climbing more. Now I can't climb, I thought I could finish these off. I thought I only had about 110 to go, but when I looked I had only done about 90 odd so have about 190 to go. :-(

So I may have a crack at the English and Welsh Hewitts, ie. Mts over 2000ft. There are about 80 of these outside the lakes I believe.

I was really surprised when I lived in Cumbria at the negative attitudes of the locals to the fell walking fraternity. They used to take the piss out of people getting kitted out as if they were doing Everest base camp for a stroll round a lake, but if it wasn't for these idiots buying that stuff there would barely be a local economy

I think there is an element of that in all hobbies? All the gear and no idea, I've seen lots about over the years. But there are probably just as many people who go out under equipped , especially when the weather deteriorates.
