Fernandinho - 2018/19 Performances

Almost since the day he joined us i thought he was (going to be) our most important player, i include David Silva in that. Only just but he pips it for me. Before you kill me for saying that just hear me out. I had seen what he can do when Shakhtar smashed Chelsea and a few other games. I was also sure we were going all out for Pep and that he would likely come. Knowing how important that role is in Peps system. He gave his all in every game under Pellegrini even when i felt a few others were not giving their all, a total professional.

So why i say he is more important boils down exclusively to the fact he starts the moves with Silva. It is really just by default that he is first in the chain which makes him a hairs width more important than Silva (in our clubs exact dynamic). The moves starts with him, he can see the setup of the field and dictates the tempo before Silva takes over those roles further up. We also have options in midfield to the point we can work without Silva better than we can when Fernandinho is out. Remember as good as Xavi and Iniesta were that they had an absolute rock behind them who gave them the platform to do their stuff; much as Fernandinho provides Silva and De Bruyne that freedom to focus on attack without keeping one eye on the rear of the midfield.

He is so bloody good that replacing him may simply be impossible out of the box. He provides assurance for the defenders and mid/attack like few players i have seen besides tactically being part of the main foundation. A sprinter needs a good set of start blocks that will never slip. Fernandinho is that set of faultless 100% reliable blocks for our creative fellas in midfield.

This is what i think goes on in our attacking midfielders mind in a given scenario...

We lose the ball in midfield, an intercepted pass. They are not breaking like hell but certainly looking for another player running on. I think someone like Silva will start to come back but not urgently. He sees Fernandinho coming in at the right pace and can see he is going to tackle the guy. I think that assured feeling specifically helps us as Silva is still then half waiting to break himself knowing Ferna will seek him out if possible. That takes supreme trust and confidence in your team mate.

Sorry for the rambling, i just wanted to put some meat on the bones of how i see Fernandinho. Also yes i know we start really with the goal keeper but i am not assuming a move starting from scratch after the ball goes out for a goal kick etc but more the to and fro of an average midfield battle/ ball being recycled only as far back as Ferna etc.

I thought it was an absolutely stunning performance by him today. He looked fresh and crisp and almost everything we did started from him in some way shape or form. No surprise that him coming back we suddenly looked like our normal selves. Everyone is calmer with him around, he knits it altogether. Numerous times we were being pressed and he just flipped it and put us on the front foot or in on goal (Mahrez miss). He plays guardiolas game perfectly. Hope he's as sharp on Thursday. They will press him but if he's on his game we'll have the (marginally) better chance. Stunning player it was a masterclass today

It blows my mind to think a few games without Silva, De Bruyne, and Aguero we've been alright and we've coped, yet you take away Ferna and it all goes a bit tits up.

Imagine 2 years ago or even a year ago we'd be without Aguero, Silva and De Bruyne at the same time it would'nt bare thinking about

Always said he’s our most important outfield player. Mainly because he has no replacement and such a unique skill set.
