Fernandinho - 2018/19 Performances

For many games - and especially in our system - that's certainly true. But against top sides - a ball-winning DM who can sense danger and can break up play - is - if not essential - certainly very helpful.

Bernardo has the motor to play deeper and break up play - but I don't think he has the defensive nous that Fernandinho has.
Absolutely, but at 24 he can still learn that, remembering that Fernandhino is nearly 10 years older, basically came here as a box to box midfielder, and still improving. Bernardo can learn from him "on the job", and he certainly has all the attributes.

Perhaps so - but Bernardo's skill set - for me - is very much CAM - a position at which he already excells. Bernardo's passing range is a short one-two, or deft dink. And he's got a very good shot on him. I think that Bernardo will play AM for us - which for me, is his best position. Fernandinho's skill set is unique in our side - and we really need to sign a replacement for him ASAP.

"He is an incredible, outstanding player for us. Against Liverpool he showed it again.

"And pray, pray [for him] to be fit for as long as possible."

Of course, as pointed out so many times on here, what he really means is: " He's not the right kind of player for a Pep Guardiola side"

It just keeps getting lost, in translation.

You don't want to limit a player of Bernardo's strengths by playing him as a DM, a player like him has to play in the attacking third

I’d be interested to hear how you think that would improve the team’s balance and overall effectiveness.

In D.Silva's role rather than where KDB excelled so much early on under Pep. Clearly Pep wants to play him as much as possible so his position won't matter so much but where he will exert his influence will largely be determined by who is healthy in the squad - if he could, he'd field the entire outfield players all with midfielders

Because of his ability to create passing options and reverse the play so effortlessly he needs to have the ball and be close to the box so anchoring him deep would be squandering his best attributes

Bernardo's lack of height would be a big problem playing that position in the PL. Fernandinho wins a lot of headers.

Watched the whole 90 of the Liverpool game back over the weekend and he was absolutely fantastic.

Truly world class performance!

I wonder if KDB being injured half a season has any relation to Fernandinho's new found creativity this year?

If anyone fancies a leisurely Saturday evening read about the man, the myth, the legend:
