"Roberto Mancini is exploring his options in the transfer window after discovering that Adam Johnson will miss the next three months, and possibly the rest of the season, with an ankle injury.
The diagnosis will have ramifications for the England team, with the Manchester City winger out of the Euro 2012 qualifier against Wales in March, and also for Shaun Wright-Phillips, who has handed in a transfer request. The club have turned it down and Mancini said it would be "difficult" to let the 29-year-old leave in light of Johnson's absence and with Mario Balotelli missing because of knee issues.
Johnson was hurt in training on Thursday and a second scan has shown that the injury is worse than first anticipated, meaning he will probably need an operation to repair his ankle ligaments.
"We've lost Adam for three months," Mancini said. "He's possibly out for the rest of the season or maybe back for the FA Cup final. It's the same injury [Aleksandar] Kolarov suffered earlier this season and it's a big problem for us."
Brian Marwood, City's football administrator, is an admirer of Ashley Young and has been monitoring his position closely at Aston Villa. Alexis Sanchez, Udinese's Chile international, is another option, but Mancini admitted he was not optimistic. "We've got only 24 hours left in the transfer window and we will try to do something, but in 24 hours it will be very difficult."
Mancini went on to say City would not try to hijack Chelsea's proposed move for Fernando Torres now they know the Liverpool striker wants to leave Anfield. Torres was regarded as City's plan B in case they failed to complete a deal for Edin Dzeko from Wolfsburg but there is no desire to bring in both players. "If we take another player it will be a winger," the manager said.
Fulham have been trying to arrange a deal for Wright-Phillips and the winger has also attracted interest from Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers. "This will affect that," Mancini said. "It's true he has put in a transfer request and I understand that because he is not playing. But we haven't had an offer for Wright-Phillips and it would be difficult to let him leave now."
Carlos Tevez missed the 1-1 draw against Notts County with a back injury but Mancini said he hoped the club's leading scorer would be fit for the game at Birmingham City on Wednesday.
Balotelli is due to return to Manchester tomorrow after a two-week period of rehabilitation with a renowned a knee specialist in Killington, Vermont. His trip to the United States was aimed at building the knee muscles"
