Feyenoord (H) | CL | Post Match Thread

Shite ending to a game we actually did alright in, not brilliantly in, just alright in up until their first goal and then it was as clear as day we’d crumble.

He was right to make changes at 3 nil with 15 minutes to go against a team that hadn’t troubled us whatsoever until they scored. But those frailties are going to be exposed time and again unfortunately. I wouldn't have expected our under 13’s to draw the game from that point in all honesty with some proper game management.

Individual mistakes gave those goals away tonight. But with a team low on confidence as soon as that first goes in we should have shut up shop, changed the shape and let the game run its course. Instead we just carried on with plan A, as it’s the only plan we have and well, you know the rest.

Our defensive shape is non existent and if we do bother to make a challenge it’s an apologetic one. I’d fucking love to know what we do in training. I suspect it’s rondo, rondo and a bit of rondo. We sure as hell aren’t practicing defensive work.

I’d play a 4 5 1 on Sunday, but actually a back 4. Not wing backs, inverted midfielders or any other complicated shit, not because it’s the scousers, but because we need to shore it up and stop the rot and the players we have currently available cannot defend whilst playing in this system. We saw tonight on occasion, admittedly against weaker opposition than usual, that if we play forward passes instead of twatting about side to side for 6 minutes to gain 40 yards we can actually create real chances, so going heavier at the back should help us in more ways than one.
Sure we did play really tight one year at Anfield and it’s one of the closest we came to winning in normal times (Covid not included) was it the game Mahrez missed a penny?

I'm all for giving the kids some game time and normally 3-0 up with 15 to go is about right.
But on the back of 5 defeats that time wasn't tonight
Most of the season we have been keeping the ball on the edge of the opponents box when we are not winning and passing from side to side
3-0 up tonight and we didn't do it
I would even but 10 men behind the ball just to get that win. Fuck all this pep doesn't want to change his style. Tonight was all about getting a win and that last 15 was shambolic. Same mistakes, too high of a line. Just defend 10 yards further back.
I'm so frustrated. That's worse than the spurs result that for me
Can we just get this set right, the subs were made at 68 mins with best part of half an hour to go!

Rubbish, it was players already on the pitch that mentally switched off, who contributed to the goals.
We're looking for answers here, mate. Players don't suddenly switch off when subs are made. We collapsed when the subs were made. You don't magically lose form in 5 minutes.

The subs that would have made better sense would have been to sub Gvardiol off for Simpson-Pusey. And then move Ake out to the left where he normally plays. And then play a straight back 4. No one goes up. The Gundo for KDB sub also didn't make sense to me since KDB doesn't play the 6 spot. That means that either McAtee has to play back or Nunes had to. Or Rico or Akanji needed to move up. It was a circus in the back the last 15 minutes. The subs made it so.

He’s fucked whatever he does in that situation.
Gundogan needs rest, he’s played far too much when he was brought back to play a bit part role.
Like it or not he’s our best option for Sunday so bringing him off was the right decision at 3-0 with 75 minutes on the clock.
Foden had barely played due to fitness/illness.
Again probably thinking ahead to Sunday cos he could make a difference if full of energy.
Now if he brings on Kev and he gets injured some fans say what you risking him for?
But then on Sunday the same fans will be crying cos he’s not match fit or in form.
Kev needs minutes on the pitch.
I ain’t blaming Pep cos those players are more than good enough, capable enough to ‘hang on’ to a 3 goal lead at 75 minutes without just throwing the towel in.
I’m with you on the subs and the reason why but not altogether one sub at a time. Slows the game down and stops there momentum if they do get a goal

There is a reason Pep picks Rico over Nunes. It comes down to awareness, sharpness, being available in position on the pitch and working hard including defending. One player is just 20 years old from the academy the other late 20's and cost tens of millions.

Nunes has had some decent games recently but it was hard to see today. Others may differ but you need to look at him off the ball and not just with it. Sad. He leaves gaps and the team gets exposed. Not a scapegoat but he doesnt add enough. This was his big chance to shine. A big money signing, in his prime and the second year at City who cannot get a regular place even with all the injuries. I hope I am proved wrong.
