Feyenoord (H) | CL | Post Match Thread

That's a very simplistic view.
Correlation does not guarantee causation.
So you think the subs were successful?
Not a simplistic view at all the evidence was there before your very eyes. I said at the time I hope this doesn’t mess things up
The team was playing better looking like City gaining confidence and rhythm apart from the odd player It was looking like more goals and not conceding that would have been a massive step forward but it ended with the opposite

Yep. My parents were considered ‘strict’ by my mates but by the time I was 13 I’d been all over south Manchester and the city centre on bikes, buses, on foot, with mates, sibling and Jack Jones. And I was an 80s/90s kid. Don’t talk to strangers, cross with the green man, 10pm for the phone box and you were golden.
Age 13, 1969, 98 buzz to Stevenson square, wander into piccadilly, football specials to Maine Road. even night games sometimes on my own.

There isn't a top side on the planet that would cope with the level of injuries in key positions that we're dealing with - even our stand-ins getting injured. But injuries apart and players losing their main attribute as time and age catches up, one or two other elite players are struggling and not grabbing games by the scruff of the neck as they normally strive to do. And yes, the phrase 'out of their depth' springs to mind re players coming in due to injuries. Yes, we've made strange mistakes in the last few games - players having otherwise solid games but having a weird couple of seconds. The effort is there and after the magic of the last eight/nine years, a season like this, even with a fully fit side, is perfectly normal - strange it hasn't happened before now. We just have to suck it up and rebuild in the summer.
Last nights final 18 minutes had nothing to do with injuries and everything to do with confidence.
I’m still puzzled as to why we crossed a corner straight into the box and took a quick free kick at 3-2!!

Utter madness by KDB snd Grealish.

When you add that to the brain farts by Gvardiol it’s always going to end up in disaster.

Bossed that game for 70-75 minutes, then a mistake by Gvardiol, compounded by Ederson, gave them a chance.

Even thereafter, we still looked the better team until Lewis pulled the high line back far enough to play them in. Ederson completely fluffed his lines TWICE…once with his usual rush of blood to the head, thinking he was faster and smarter than he is and then being beaten at his post.

Gvardiol, who has had a torrid time of it recently, will get pilloried, but when I think of all he does and both his defensive and attacking presence, gets a bit of a break from me, even though it was a bit of a howler.

My biggest concern, as I believe others see, is that we seem incapable of being a real, complete team.

At 75 minutes and 3-0 up, the subs should have been to shut up shop and kill the game off. Instead, we were chasing a fourth with KDB, Grealish and McAtee all seeming to be given the go ahead to attack, attack, attack, and we all know where that responsibility lies.

At 75 mins, 3 up, and 3 subs, we SHOULD have been playing a 4-5-1, battening down the hatches, controlling the middle of the park, and seeing the game out. Instead, we are shuffling 3 or 4 defensive players around, just to get KDB and Grealish some minutes and give McAtee another cameo for the transfer fee!!!

I watched the game again tonight in the hotel (watching Dippers & Madrid now!) and I honestly think we played very well with the players at our disposal, until the substitutions made too many changes to the structure and the defensive half of the team was completely changed. Completely crazy stuff from a Manager on the longest losing run of his career and a team that he openly describes as “fragile.”

Watching Liverpool beat Madrid off the field, it will take a strong performance from a team completely out of form (City) to get anything out of the game against even an average Dipper team.

Fingers and toes crossed… :-/

Of course the subs weren't successful, but it was individual fuck ups that led to the goals. Perhaps they should have been brought on at five minute intervals so as not to cause too much disruption, but Feyenoord were so poor it's easy to see why Pep risked it.

There are lots of comments about the substitutions and a Gvardiol brain fart costing us the game last night, but in my opinion Ederson cost us that game. Shocking goalkeeping, especially being beaten at his near post for their 2nd goal, and lord knows what he was thinking to come steaming out for the 3rd. He is good with his feet but as an actual shot stopper he is nearly as bad a Claudio Bravo. He does not inspire any confidence in that back line at all.

Obviously, there's a confidence issue in there as well - the guys are human - one bad run in nine years. We have to suck it up, get through the season, rebuild. Our monumentally successful coach will get us through this.

Decided to jump back in time, to a thread from December of 2020 after a match against West Ham. We were 12 points back of Liverpool that year sitting mid table. Interesting quotes from this thread, feel free to have a gander and maybe it will put something’s in to perspective. Keep in mind we won the title that year.
