Bossed that game for 70-75 minutes, then a mistake by Gvardiol, compounded by Ederson, gave them a chance.
Even thereafter, we still looked the better team until Lewis pulled the high line back far enough to play them in. Ederson completely fluffed his lines TWICE…once with his usual rush of blood to the head, thinking he was faster and smarter than he is and then being beaten at his post.
Gvardiol, who has had a torrid time of it recently, will get pilloried, but when I think of all he does and both his defensive and attacking presence, gets a bit of a break from me, even though it was a bit of a howler.
My biggest concern, as I believe others see, is that we seem incapable of being a real, complete team.
At 75 minutes and 3-0 up, the subs should have been to shut up shop and kill the game off. Instead, we were chasing a fourth with KDB, Grealish and McAtee all seeming to be given the go ahead to attack, attack, attack, and we all know where that responsibility lies.
At 75 mins, 3 up, and 3 subs, we SHOULD have been playing a 4-5-1, battening down the hatches, controlling the middle of the park, and seeing the game out. Instead, we are shuffling 3 or 4 defensive players around, just to get KDB and Grealish some minutes and give McAtee another cameo for the transfer fee!!!
I watched the game again tonight in the hotel (watching Dippers & Madrid now!) and I honestly think we played very well with the players at our disposal, until the substitutions made too many changes to the structure and the defensive half of the team was completely changed. Completely crazy stuff from a Manager on the longest losing run of his career and a team that he openly describes as “fragile.”
Watching Liverpool beat Madrid off the field, it will take a strong performance from a team completely out of form (City) to get anything out of the game against even an average Dipper team.
Fingers and toes crossed… :-/
