FIFA Women's World Cup 2023

I couldn't care less whether she's the new face of the Lionesses or not. I just don't think she needs making an example of or what she did was that serious. It just wasn't as easy to disguise as much worse stuff that goes on. I dont really think a three game ban would be any more of a deterrent than a one game ban. The damage her sending could have done on the day and the fall out in the days afterwards would be deterrent enough if that's what people want. Missing the next two games is a huge loss for her and ample punishment I'd say.
Apologies. I wasn't saying you were dismissing it because of efforts to make her "Miss Lioness." However, I feel like that is happening.

You are correct. Physically, it was not much. But mentally she wanted to stro on her. She wanted to hurt her (not necessarily injure) to cause her physical pain outside the rules of the game. We may not agree and that's ok but I find this to be a problem.

The brazenness and brashness of it is what made it worthy of a red and a strong ban for me. She took out her frustration by stamping on her rival whilst she lay on the ground, knowing full well all eyes and cameras were on her, and there was zero chance it wouldn’t be seen. That shows a very questionable mentality (the kind most of us denounce in the men’s game).

It is the sort of petulance and lack of care for others we are seeing at the youth level more and more (and in western society more generally); a sort of self-centred ambition and perspective on the world. As you said, she wanted to inflict pain in that moment (even if she didn’t really). And, for me at least, it desperately needs to be stamped out of the game (pardon the pun) and culture writ-large.

If she didn’t want to be made an example of, she shouldn’t have done what she did, on the world stage.

As I have said before, she is 21, a grown adult, knows better, and still did it.

Turns out they didn't get another presentable chance after all. That result is tough on the Japanese.

Shame they didn't turn up until 2-0 down, as they showed how well they could play at times after that.

Credit to the Swedes though, they had a plan and it worked. They're a tough team, good on setpieces, good keeper.

Spain-Sweden is quite the match up.

On paper, they could cancel each other out. Or it could end up being an end-to-end goal fest.

I personally hope for the latter, with us just nicking the win. ;-)

I think it's right it's punished, I just don't think there's any need to get carried away. I can think of plenty of occasions where Fernandinho would take a little look before making sure his elbow was in the right place to catch an opponent in the head in a seemingly fair tussle for the ball or there's Harry Kane deliberately backing into opponents mid air. Those actions are way more common in the game and way more dangerous but nobody is calling for three game bans for that kind of stuff.

If VAR hadn't have intervened in the Lauren James incident I think most of the talk post match would have been "she got away with one there" but nobody would be calling for a three game ban or for her to be made an example of. It's just because it came in a big moment in a big game that it's become a much bigger thing.
