FIFA Women's World Cup 2023

Shouldn't be comparing womens football to mens football at all it's like a completely different sport but slightly the same.

Someone else mentioned that the quality of womens football is comparable with lower premiership sides, it isn't and it never will be. That said if you like it then carry on liking it but it doesn't and wont have the quality of the mens game ever IMHO.

People base their opinions on womens football on what they see and in the main I would agree with them.
To be honest a half decent pub side would comfortably beat the top women’s sides. It’s improving but the standard and ball striking is still a very low standard.

I'd say more like semi-pro probably, but that would always be the case because of the difference in pace, size and strength. In a lot of ways it'd be more like men v boys - even someone who's strong and 5 feet 4 will struggle against someone who's 6 feet 2. You just have to forget long switches of play, deep crosses, hits from long distance - it is a slightly different game as a result, but there's still ability on show.

Again, it's a little irrelevant though. Do people watch the women's 100m final and then go "yeah but Usain Bolt (or whoever it is now) would beat her?".

Unfortunately the women's game is still at the stage where the wealth of the nation matters most. Its unfair, its unequal, but I'd like to see more acknowledgement of that by the likes of the USA, England, Spain etc. They're winning because of the enormous amounts of money they spend.

I hope it evens out like the men's game has to a degree. Because they're some very skilled players playing for the smaller, lesser funded teams at the WC.

But go England!

Very true.

Haiti seem to be making a massive jump up with good young players, but I'm guessing that they're basically picking French women who are qualified through parents/grandparents. So in effect they'll be overachieving because of the amount France have spent on development over the years.

There are always some countries who can make the most of that rule - and fair play to them if they do.

Didn't some under 20 mixed gender team beat the USA women's team by a large scoreline in 2019?.

Half the Morocco team were from France too, apparently.

Some people do, yeah. Some people are desperate for any reason to slag off female athletes, which is why clips of that mixed relay event were so widely shared. Instagram reels are full of 'look how shit women are at football' content.

Perhaps a better comparison would be do people watch Floyd Mayweather winning his 50th professional fight and say 'yeah, but he wouldn't last one round with a heavyweight?' Or even watch the Conference playoff and say, 'Haha, City reserves would beat these.' No, because it's not about ability, it's about slagging off women.

The most annoying thing about women's football is having to wade through all of the comparisons to men's football. And it's not just from the critics. The sport has got such a chip on its shoulder about comparisons to the men's game that they initiate half of these comparisons themselves. All that 'Come and watch a game where the players don't dive every 2 minutes' shite.

Totally agree.

Spot on about boxing. Think I've used that comparison myself quite a while back but had forgotten it. It's almost as if size and power matter in sports, which is why they have the weight categories.

Football is football at the end of it. I'd watch all types - men, women, different ages. It's all the same - good players, bad players, great moments, big mistakes. All football has it.
