Fighter Jet Over South Manchester

Haven't read through the thread as I'm busy, but just wondering what is the point in the military escort? How is a military jet going to help a plane that has a suspected nutcase and bomb on it?

By taking it out of the air before it hits a densely populated area if needs be.

By taking it out of the air before it hits a densely populated area if needs be.

but how would it know?
what if it was on the approach to landing over stockport and it the bomb blew...how would a fighter jet help?

I think it's if the plane went off course and was heading for say Manchester City centre - they'd rather blow it up over a sparsely populated area and kill a few farmers and out of towners than have thousands of people killed and a large chunk of a city centre destroyed.

Fighter is on same freq as plane and ATC. If plane alters it's flight path WITHOUT ATC instruction, it will be quickly queried, then, pending the response, you either follow the fighter's commands or....

No fucking around anymore since aircraft have been determined to be considered as a "weapon of mass destruction."

If you just want to blow up a jet you don't need to tell them there is a device. You just use it.
Claiming there is a device on board is a threat which is then used to do something else. That something else may be worse than blowing up the jet. A fighter escort gives the possibility of choosing the lesser of two evils. The guy on the trigger has a tough job but the guy making the decision has an even tougher one.

Who would make the final decision to blow up a plane with hundreds of civilians on it?

Always thought there was a good chance the 9/11 plane aimed at the White house might have been shot down, it was the last one in the air.

Yep if the passengers hadn't taken over that plane it would have happened...
