Films that are considered cult classics

The Blues Brothers

"It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses"

Brilliant.

Has there every been a better line ever written to start a journey?

I don't think so.

Blade Runner

Set the benchmark for all dystopian futuristic landscapes ever since.

Superb film.

And a Vangelis soundtrack!

Some unmentioned to this point:

Office Space
Rushmore
Napoleon Dynamite
A Christmas Story (in the US a total Xmas institution, more than any other Xmas film -- runs 24 hours a day Xmas day on TBS)
Maybe the first Willy Wonka film
Clerks

I'm thinking small movies that didn't do that well originally but acquired a massive following later because they were influential. Blade Runner is a good example.

As an American I don't consider Blues Brothers a cult film as it was based on a hugely popular Saturday Night Live sketch and Belushi/Ackroyd were already giant stars. I'm guessing kind of the way Brits wouldn't consider Holy Grail a cult film but in the US it is.
