Sad that this has happened, especially in a country where dogs are adored. But it says a lot that this level of outrage and sympathy arent shown when human beings ( or even other animals) are the victims of similar situations.
Stuuuuuu said:No, it's just that I don't prescribe to the double standard. Everyone's so upset about unpleasant things happening to dogs on account of them being pets, but that isn't an adequate explanation. It just isn't good enough. A cow and a dog want to live just as much as each other, yet one is somehow deserving and the other isn't. How they came into being is immaterial. The argument that cows are bred for food and dogs are domesticated, is just too simplistic to be a valid argument. It implies that some are more deserving on the basis of the general human perception of them.
And the bit of land we happen to be on shouldn't matter. If this had happened in a country where dogs are bred to be eaten, should we not care, since that's just the way dogs are perceived in that culture? The culture / country argument just does not hold water.
I would be a massive hypocrite if I got upset about this, and didn't get upset about dogs in certain other countries or cows or guinea pigs etc etc suffering at the hands of humans (on a way, way, greater scale) regardless of the reasons for their suffering.

Surely an equivalent scenario would be 60 kids in a children's home dying in a fire? I'd be utterly astonished if such a tragedy didn't raise far more money than the fire at the dog's home.
To be honest, I'm getting pissed off with those that keep peddling this stupid myth that the generosity of people in this case means that they're putting dogs before kids.

But that's not a 'similar situation' though. I'm sure that the level of outrage and sympathy shown would dwarf this had it been an orphanage with 60 children perishing in a blaze.
Exactly what is Comic Relief (about £30m every year if I remember rightly) all about then if we don't show sympathy for other human beings, what about the millions of pounds that the NSPCC gets every year, the Stephen Sutton fundraiser - three times what this has raised, was it £30m for the ice bucket challenge? - I'll leave it at that.
Still think it's one of the most stupid posts on this thread, and there's been some real competition for that spot!

Maybe he needs some mineral water? And as for the Dwarf orphanage, I completely agree..
