To be honest, it amazes me that people can afford them. People are moaning about the cost of food and fuel, even people in good jobs, and yet apparently they can afford to send hundreds of pounds up in smoke. It's not just a few houses either, and if anything, there seems to be an inverse relation between apparent wealth and money spent on fireworks.

Round here, it's been like being under bombardment for two nights. But there have been people setting them off at random times (including the middle of the fucking night) since the start of October. All I can say is that I wouldn't mind 10% of the money spent, just on the ones I have heard.

I live in the part of Ireland where the burning of Catholics isn't celebrated and thankfully 5th November has just been another day for me for the last 7 years.

It’s not celebrating the burning of catholics, Fawkes was simply a terrorist. If the plotters had been successful it would likely have been a high death toll both immediately and with additional fatalities over the following weeks, caused by shrapnel and falling masonry over a wide area. Bonfires were a traditional way to commemorate events because they were cheap and easy to arrange so there was no excuse not to follow the royal decree issued by King James. The practice of burning an effigy of Fawkes came much later but he wasn’t burned to death at the time anyway, none of the plotters were.

Little known fact - up until 1859 the Church of England had a special service to give thanks for the discovery of the plot and also the landing of King William III at Torbay on November 5th 1688.

Parliament abolished it because it apparently caused ill-will between Protestants and Catholics.

They were dealt with very quickly. Some historians believe the plotters were framed by James I's minister. But that sort of thing would never happen.

4 hours our cat been hiding below the bed. I've spent some of that time laying in floor next to her, trying to reassure her. Been giving her calming stuff in food for over a week but still terrified. Thankfully died down a little now

Our cat passed away last week 14 years we had her but she would hide behind the couch at the sound of fireworks. Thunder too I knew when thunder and lightning was coming when she hid behind the couch.
