First ever dog

Springer spaniel... end of....

On our fifth and sixth now .... love 'em, but can be hard work if you aren't used to them like the OP.

Whatever breed, go for a rescue! We have had three, and they give so much love. Our first, Berry was six years old when we got her. She had spent those six years locked in a shed and used for breeding. (Bastid puppy farms) And she was the sweetest most happy little soul, who lived till sixteen and a half.

At the front here, with her man, Goater in their favourite place, Cornwall.

We got our first dog five years ago ….a working cocker. It was absolutely bonkers and causing any number of arguments in the house, reluctantly after 12 weeks we gave him back to the breeder

Fast forward to June this year and after much thought we got a golden retriever pup and it’s the best thing we’ve done in a long time. He is a beautiful dog with a gorgeous chilled temperament, eager to please and train. My advice would be to get a retriever, the breeder I got him from is expecting another litter soon, happy to pass on her details
Our Goldie is 12 now and she’s the apple of my eye. I met a bloke on Formby beach when she was young and he had four. The eldest was 18 and still going strong.

Since that day I’ve given her cod liver oil, and sardines with Harringtons. I’ve since added green mussel lipid too. It’s all about the joints with these beautiful things so please don’t have him jumping out of the car like we did for years, teach him to step out of the back footwell (takes 5 minutes) or get a ramp to protect his front legs.

I love all dogs (and animals) but the Golden Retriever is another level. Every good home should have a dog and the kennels should be empty, my next one will definitely be a rescue.

I’ve had two Goldies, both beautiful well behaved dogs, I did try and rescue a third one but was told I couldn’t as I already had another dog. it was then I decided to become a masochist and rescued a Beagle!

That’s brilliant mate, you’ve done such a good thing and it will all be worth it. Rescue places should never turn down a good home but your Beagle will always love you for it.

My daughter has a Cocker (although spends more time with us since we lost our big girl) its absolutely bonkers, lovely dog affectionate and loyal but hyper, we have always had German Shepherds and Dobermans and the owning experience is chalk and cheese not going to say which is better but decide what you want a dog to be for you then research what fits your lifestyle.

I’ve got two now and they are both the most loving dogs I’ve ever had.

I’d love a rescue to go with our WCS but they have so many tick boxes it’s almost impossible, no kids, or no cats, there are so many now as well after Covid.
