Fish

If ever you’re in Dublin there is an upmarket chipper, for want of a better phrase called <>< . Commonly just referred to as ‘fish’.
It’s in a very unfashionable area. Benburb Street. It used to be the red light area of Dublin.
It’s fish restaurant but really a specialist chipper with wine thrown in and limited seating.

It’s wonderful fish though. Relatively cheaper than fancy restaurants but quality is every bit as good. Great for a night out. A few pints after maybe.
You can takeaway or use the bar seating.

Was in Dublin recently and in a takeaway near Heuston station called Romayos. Burgers etc were alright but the proper chips were the nicest chips I've had in a long while - perfect after a couple of pints.

Lemon Sole
Crab
Sea Urchin (Uni)
Eel (Unagi)
Fresh Anchovies
Baked Oysters (wrapped in bacon and served on toast)

The only practical skill I have ever learned is how to fillet/clean/prepare fish and seafood. Taught myself from Rick Stein books and videos.

The one I can’t get right is Gurnard. Morrisons sell it but even after having watched videos on how to fillet it I still fucked it up.

As an aside, Mrs ZHTC is Japanese and her friend owns a fugu restaurant in Osaka. It tasted quite bland (though not unpleasant) the only time I tried it but at least I survived.

Other weird things I ate in Japan: sea slug, squid ink ice cream.

I work across the road in the Criminal Courts of Justice.
Romayos are decent alright.
Which pub did you go for beers in.
Ryan’s, Nancy Hands or Duggans?

Me and my stepdaughter are going to try a seafood boil when she settles in uni. Looking forward to that.

Yellow fin tuna is nice, but expensive. Can’t beat a nice salmon fillet.

Salmon farming, while a significant source of seafood, has several environmental and ethical concerns associated with it:
  1. Environmental Impact: Salmon farms can have substantial effects on local ecosystems. Waste from the fish, including uneaten food and feces, can accumulate on the seabed, potentially leading to nutrient pollution and affecting benthic habitats. Additionally, the use of antibiotics and chemicals to manage diseases can contaminate surrounding waters.
  2. Disease and Parasites: Farmed salmon are susceptible to diseases and parasites like sea lice, which can spread to wild fish populations. This can disrupt local fish populations and impact the health of wild fish stocks.
  3. Escapes: Farmed salmon sometimes escape from their pens, which can lead to genetic contamination of wild salmon populations. Escaped farmed salmon can outcompete wild fish for resources and may introduce diseases or parasites.
  4. Feed and Resources: Farmed salmon are often fed a diet that includes fishmeal and fish oil, which comes from wild fish. This raises concerns about the sustainability of these feed sources and their impact on marine ecosystems.
  5. Animal Welfare: The conditions in which farmed salmon are kept can be a concern for animal welfare. High-density pens can lead to stress, disease, and injury among the fish.
  6. Chemical Use: The use of chemicals and antibiotics in salmon farming to prevent disease can have negative impacts on both the environment and human health. There are concerns about the potential for antibiotic resistance and the effects of these substances on marine life.
Efforts are being made to address these issues, such as developing more sustainable feed options, improving farm management practices, and advancing technologies to minimize environmental impacts. However, balancing the need for seafood with environmental and ethical considerations remains a challenge.

Wild Salmon in Scotland will be pretty much extinct within the next decade.
