Fitness

I’ve started swimming this week and played badminton on Wednesday. I hate the early part when you feel like you’re trying your best but can’t see any benefits.

How long before I can see progress?

A month.

Take a picture of yourself today.

Don't even look at yourself again for a month.

Keep it up over the month and you'll be shocked at how different you look. People lose heart because they are in the mirror after every workout and don't see a difference.

Cheers mate. I’ll do that.

I'm back at it as well. Prior to COVID I was in the gym 5 days out of 7, mix of weights and boxing on a hanging bag. It all went to shit and I got lazy. It was like being a kid again and a bit of a Billy no mates move but I had a kickaround against the garage wall on Sunday morning, whittled an hour away. Mild weights and pushups on Wednesday, did the same today and ate some really boring but healthy food after. Hoping I can make something of it.

I was made redundant at the start of the first lockdown at 56 (I was going to finish anyway) and started to take a daily bike ride. The fact that I wasn't chained to the laptop all day mixed with the cycling and occasional rounds of golf meant that I started to lose weight... I'm 2 years retired at the end of March and I'm now up to ~32 miles on the bike every weekday and to date I've lost around 3.5 stone

I am close to the weight when I joined the RAF in 1983 at 13.5 stone and I've never felt better

Once you get into the exercise and start to see a difference it's as addictive as beer and biscuits IMHO... The other major plus is that for just under 2 hours on the bike I don't look at my mobile phone so it's been good for my mental health too.....

I challenge myself on the bike ride as I record the trip on my Garmin fenix watch so try to better the time every ride out... Summer my best is 1 hr 42 mins for the 32 miles but with the cold weather and leaf litter everywhere on the cycle paths I'm doing it in around 1 hr 50 mins on average at the minute

In fairness to the original poster, I guarantee he knows already the importance of reducing his alcohol intake and embarking on a fitness regime. It's seems clear, however, that he is struggling for motivation, an issue with which I'm only too familiar. I set out with good intentions which largely evaporate within a short period until I find myself back to square one. What then happens is that I beat myself up with feelings of guilt which then send me into a self-perpetuating downward spiral. When seeking an improvement in physical health, the first important step is to understand how a person's mental wellbeing is inextricably tied to achieving that goal. I'm probably the wrong person to be offering advice. However, I've sufficient awareness of my own situation to understand that anyone caught in this horrible catch-22 scenario needs to seek some form of mental health therapy before they can address their physical condition. A visit to the GP is generally the best place to start.
