Five years that's all we got.

to be ABLE to defend is quite subjective, i honestly think that if we took our chances properly this season we'd be in the mix (and had a couple of the pens we should have had). Our defence has been poor but improvements at the scoring end would out weigh improvements at the defending end. Says I.
I agree. We are poor at both ends of the pitch. Our ability to retain the ball for 70% of the game protects our defence which one for one is terrible but it leaves us vulnerable especially against the best teams. I have lost count of the number of times where we have dominated the ball but lost in one of the opposition's few attacks.

I think the forward play will improve when Jesus returns as his pace frees space for Sterling and Sane, and makes himself a target for Silva and De Bruyne. I don't think it was an accident that the one month that Jesus played for us it was our best month of the season

In that month, we played West Ham, Palace and Swansea. I think that also could have something to do with it - pinning hopes on a 20 year old who is new to the league, regardless of how good he looked prior to the injury is hoping a little bit too much in my opinion

In regard to the progress over the last 5 years and what the next 5 will look like. I think it is going to be a lot of fun, if fans let it be fun. Also, I think the days of Premier League teams challenging for the league AND Champions League in the same season are long gone

This This This !!!

Some 'fans' on here are fucking clueless
The club wasn't spending 150 million a season at that point

Fucking stupid to compare those eras

People can call the OP spoilt, ungrateful etc but Im sure the likes of Silva, Aguero, Kompany, Khalddon (only have to watch his end of season interview after the QPR match) would have liked to won more especially after the first title win. If the club fails to win the Fa Cup this season, then the last three season's would have produced just the one league cup. Piss poor considering the money spent.

The women's side are showing hows its done tbf

For who? It's not meaningless for me. It's certainly not meaningless for nearly all of the friends who I consider to be supporters. None of them have ever said to me "you know what, this Mansour takeover thing - it's a bit shit. Means nothing to me because we didn't win the league".

I've said it before. Our owners don't have the same trophy-lust that some of our more 'enlightened' posters do. They don't just want to win, they want to win a certain way. That may take longer, mean less trophies, but I for one won't be complaining as I don't feel entitled to anything or like i'm owed something by our great owners.

This sort of threads drive me bonkers and I only peek at them to test my blood pressure medication.

I've been a season-ticket holder since before many on here were born and where we are now means so much to me. I love that the club wants to play entertaining football. Winning trophies is great and I dream of Guardiola doing the Quadruple (Quintuple, if you count the Community Shield) but I don't need my club to win everything all the time to be entertained or proud of where my club is.

I would love my club to stop being perennial underachievers and I want Guardiola to be given the time and backing to be the guy that finally does that but what underachievement amounts to these days is so much better than it was for most of this club's history.

We are blessed at the moment and we should just enjoy it.

To recap then:-
We don't know how lucky we are.
Wanting success equates to being spoilt.
We played York away.
No team can dominate in this era.
or
We missed opportunities to build on the initial success.
Recruitment is too hit or miss.
Waiting for Pepo has set us back.

Either way, the next two seasons are set to be very interesting and eventful.
Get on the ride. Whether you enjoy it or not is up to you.

Great post, and i'd suggest its far more in accordance with the thinking of the vast majority of our supporters.

Here, what's wrong with the Septuple? (European Super Cup + Club World Cup)

Even though I think the OP is a bit OTT I do agree with the sentiment that we didn't really kick on like many of us thought we would after 2012, I thought we'd dominate for a few years at least as only the Govan p*sscan kept the rags competitive and the rest were also-rans, but that's football for you!

The club would say it was FFP's fault that we didn't dominate but we spent plenty on average players, I think it was more to do with us wanting Pep so badly and waiting for him. He is (apparently) such good mates with Txiki that it was pretty certain he would manage us, but he wanted to first experience Munich which is fair enough. Pellegrini was only ever a stop-gap, and he knew it, so you could argue a league win and league cup under his stop-gap reign was not a bad return.

We've got Pep now, and OK it is a bit more of a building job than if he would have come three years ago, but the same players in the same positions would still need replacing anyway and it is a drastically different mentality and way of playing under Pep so still think there would have been a bedding in period.

So if you would have asked me back end of May 2012, with a stinking hangover from celebrating that Aguero moment every day for probably the whole summer, if I would have been happy with the trophy return up to now I would probably have said no, because we had the best team in the league and I only saw us getting stronger.

If, however, you would have also said "but in 2017 you will have the biggest (and arguably best) manager in world football, capable of transforming the club for the next decade, and play some electric stuff while you are at it even if there is a bit of a bedding in period" I would have bitten your hand off. Pep is capable of laying the foundation for how this club will play football forever, I'm pretty sure that is what our owners want, and if that meant a bit of short term pain for long term gain it is more than worth it.

If we aren't going in the right direction, why is it panic stations at the Swamp? Employing the most hated manager in football and trying to buy up all our scouts, just to try and keep up. So no point looking back now, the future is ours!

My bad...although TBF I was thinking of one season rather than 12 months i.e. following up a season where we have won the league or FA Cup but following up an EPL & UCL winning season with a Septuple winning might just shut the moaners up.
