Flights to USA

It may be worth buying your exit ticket to canada or Mexico.
As long as it shows your leaving the usa they do not care afaik.
Say your visiting friends on your way back home, maybe cheaper for you ?

Can you get an american to buy your return ticket ?, this usually helps a bit with cost.
I have friends in america, so perhaps.

In regards to getting an exit flight to canada, what do you mean.

How old are you? STA travel do deals for under 25s I think.

You could try booking a flight to New York/Atlanta on one ticket and buying a second ticket from NY to SF. Domestic flights are cheaper than international. The down side is you won't get the same protection on the second ticket as it won't be covered by EU rules and you would have to pay extra for your baggage. If you want cheap you could go standby inside the US.

You can't normally stay in the US for more than 3 months on a standard visa or ESTA.

STA are contacting me through the company that are employing me out there. Best they can do so far is £800+

How do EU and american rules differ though. The flights I will be getting have transfers so I assume that is the same.

If you don't mind driving over there try looking at flights going into LAX or into Orange County airport(John Wayne airport).
We usually fly into one of these when we visit friends over there
