Flooding in Stockport

Cheers, off to see them this morning as I believe the road is passable now, just hope they've kept warm overnight with these freezing temperatures. They're in Heald Green, not particularly close to any rivers. The bolin is two or three miles to the south, the mersey the same or further northwards. They did have some fields close by which used to act as flood plains, but as I say they're now being built on and I guess this is the result.

I do wonder if this housing plan they have across Greater Manchester, which I believe Stockport is not actually a part of and has had to find their own solutions, will have to be put on hold as there is a risk that rushing development as they have is actually affecting the quality of life of current residents, if not downright endangering life.
They’ve built lots of new houses opposite Tubs & Loo’s over the past year or so and now planning on building lots more on the land near to what used to be the Deaf School, so they will be at the back of those new houses. There’s no new infrastructure, proper irrigation natural drainage system etc let alone schools, doctors and such for these houses, yet they want to build more.

Yes . That`s the Heald Green / Handforth junction just around the corner from me . It`s been flooded often in the past but not to that extent . The MAER was also closed between Styal Rd and the Airport earlier . Not sure on how the Bramhall junction faired as that`s liable to flooding too .
Yes, the road was shut the Jet Park shuttles were having to divert through WHP all yesterday.

The UK will look like Hong Kong is a few years, we are being sold out here with all of these new houses, we need new houses to house new people, solution is to bring even more people in.

Genius!

Town is trying its best to look like London/New York with all those skyscrapers.

Another contributing factor that doesn’t get anywhere near as much attention as it should is moorland peat erosion.

The peat moors surrounding Manchester used to be covered in sphagnum moss which acts as a massive sponge and prevents water running off into the streams and rivers too quickly. Over the past decades this moss has died and we’ve suffered massive peat erosion with water just flowing straight into water courses meaning rivers further downstream overflow.

Over the past couple of years work has been done to restore some of the mosses but there’s a long way to go.

The restoration was funded by the EU I think, so of course that cash will have dried up now.
