Florian Wirtz

They hardly played if at all and that’s why so many of our key players are burnt out

You said we never win with that kind of player in your first post, yet proven otherwise despite they are not playing regularly for us.

Winning CL rellying much more on luck rather than depth in squad. I mean Real Madrid hasn't achieve treble in their entire history despite having mutiple winning squad with alot of depts in past and present days.

I clearly said I don’t remember where I read it. That does not make it incorrect. At a guess it was Statsbomb analysis but I could be wrong.

I am very aware of what a data analyst does and how it works. If you don’t think that data science can produce models to see how the addition of a particular player can affect the performance of the team as a whole you are sadly incorrect. There is of course no guarantee. City’s data science team is one of the best there is and Laurie Shaw et al know what they are doing.

You are perfectly entitled to your opinion that we have other priorities other than Wirtz. I’ve wanted him at City for a long time so I’m glad we are trying for him.
All that 'data analysis' gumph...probably explains Phillips/Nunes, and a few others. A good human football intelligence is far more productive than stats.......or do you actually, seriously, think a bunch of people sat at a computer, crunching stats will be a better evaluation of a player than Pep (or any other top manager or coach) watching them play?

I think you need both which is why every top club has both.

There are so many 'variables' with stats, you could rip most of them apart. Some of them are so ridiculous it's unreal. A family friend is a coach at a prem team (and he's a younger one, so has always had stats around his career) "you can tell more about a player by launching a ball at him, than any stat will tell you".

I never said we never win I said we won’t win the UCL again with those types of players in our squad. Of course I’d be more than happy to be proven wrong. There’s zinchenko level squad players and then there’s nunes “shouldn’t be in our squad in the first place” level players.

Actually almost every top club in the world now rely on numbers rather than "the eye test".
United are about to sack half of their scouting department as they're vastly overstaffed due to relying on eyes rather than data. Humans are generally an awful judge of most things. It's why eye witness testimony is so unreliable

I find it quite strange how many people still think the opposite and are quite entrenched in the belief. There’s no starting point for a discussion sometimes so I don’t bother anymore. I suppose it’s human nature to turn away from anything that contradicts such a strongly held belief.

It’s akin to someone who believes they’ve seen a ghost. Just better to go along with it.

I don’t think City purely recruit on footballing ability

Anyone thinking wirtz is coming here is dilusional.
If Wirtz were not interested, we wouldn't be after him.

I don't know how some people think football transfers work, but the absolute first thing anyone does is informally say to the agent/player "would you like to come here" before they ever go anywhere near a bid or a wage proposal or anything else.

People don't pursue transfers on a hunch that they might want to come.

True, but there's also a difference between going 'yeah im not ruling anything out, we can chat' to a club and 'yes, definitely!'...the former can be used to just keep your options open and be used as a bargaining tool (not saying that's happening now, but it does happen) and also lead a club on for ages before eventually their heart is not in it. We'll see I guess.

This is true.
