It is a place of gossip and rumour and those producing it get paid for engagement. Clubs employ it for PR purposes and they often create the narrative and apply pressure on deals. It's just like the 'he's a lovely player but we can't talk about him because he is at another club" quotes that we used to get.
Nothing is done until it's announced on the OS. Social media is fun, part of the game, creates interest in quieter parts of the season, but not the be fully trusted.
