Food From Your Youth

At primary school we used to ask the dinner ladies if there were any seconds, usually on the pudding, "any seconds please miss". Anyone else used to do that?
In Grammar School on Chips day we used to wait until the last minute of serving then go into the canteen in the hope they would shovel extra chips on. Worked well some times.
Mind you it was normally with Spam !!!!

I can remember if mum used to go out & I was hungry, 1st stop was the biscuit tin, usually empty because I had 2 big brothers,
Next to check was for packets of solid cooking jelly in the kitchen cupboard, next it was see if I could find any cooking chocolate which had a weird texture & tasted odd but was better than nothing,
After that it was any raisens & sultanas used for cooking, & if things got really desperate I have tasted Bob Martin Dog Chock Drops!

Salmon paste butties
Beef paste butties
Angel delight

Food of the Gods

Had a spasm of nostalgia in Tesco a couple of years back and bought a packet of Angel Delight - I remember loving it as a kid…. As an adult is was fucking horrid ! Maybe I’ll try salmon paste next !

My Mom was from the island Guam (US territory in the Pacific ocean).

I remember visiting Guam as a child. And being introduced to spam - a godawful gelatinous mess fit only for the starving - but I suppose, an acquired taste - very popular among Guamanians.

Love Spam. We used to get Spam fritters at school.

If you were really posh, you could also get sliced luncheon meat with egg in the middle.

Liquorice root...
The amount of times I was mithered at school by mates wanting to try a piece then watch them spit it out after me insisting they wouldn't like it..Squeamish pussies...
On the subject of squeamish fuckers, I was lucky enough to have an uncle who was a champion fisherman and a few of my older brothers mates had air rifles ect and they would turn up with all sorts of game. It was a regular sight to see my dad stood at the sink gutting and skinning stuff, rabbits, pigeons, fish of all descriptions. I also remember him going picking field mushrooms on a couple of occasions. I'm glad I was exposed to that sort of stuff because it hardened me to the realities of food and as an adult I have no qualms about doing it myself and my kids too have grown up from an early age seeing dead pigeons, pheasant ect hanging up by the back door or me gutting and cleaning fish I've caught from Llandudno pier.
The first time my missus saw me dealing with a pheasant, she kept moaning about the smell and the mess, and kept gypping at the sight of it...Once it was it the oven and the aromas filled the house she soon changed her mind and almost ate the whole bird. Cow.

You can still get Cornflake Tart at Bents' Garden centre.

Food of the Gods with custard.
Piece of piss to make yersel'...I used to make huge trays of the stuff when I worked at a local bakery.
In case you're interested-
Shortcrust pastry smeared with raspberry jam and cornflakes stirred into warm syrup then poured over the top of the pastry and flattened down then baked. Doddle...So are egg custard tarts.

Funny how tastes change and some crap stuff seemed to taste so good back in the day. I still remember a vesta my mum made as the best Chinese meal I've ever eaten.

Also Frey bentos. My 70's memory is of lovely layers of flakey pastry and juicy prime beef. I last had one in the mid 90's - the pastry was like the flaps of a week old corpse and I'm sure it was grizzly dog/cat food underneath:-(
