Football in The Midlands

Villa are a fairly large club, and so they should be in a City the size of Birmingham, they have just missed the boat when it comes to investment, or the wrong investor invested!

I remember Villa Winning the European cup in 1982 against Bayern Munich . So they have had some good moments in Birmingham .

The Villa fans tend to regard West Brom the same way we regard Wigan, a town on the outskirts with a small club

You would think that a City the size of Birmingham would have two large clubs, like City and United, Liverpool and Everton

That's Villa fans getting a bit deluded, WBA are a bigger club than Wigan IMO.

Villa fans are not getting a bit deluded they have been deluded for decades!
They think they are the Bayern Munich of the midlands.
Pathetic really.

Villa are the Bayern Munich of the West Midlands. They won the European Cup in 82, something that City can only dream of so far.

Sheffield and Leeds are the real underperforming big cities when it comes to top flight football.

Would that be the Villa with 20 major trophies compared to our 11?
Admittedly many in the distant past.

23 to our 15 but anyway...

villa are a big club certainly, it's just surprising there isn't another of them in the midlands.

I am really talking about nowadays many clubs have a good history, but the point I am making is not really about Villa it's about football in the Midlands and the lack of top teams in what is one of the biggest urban centres in the UK

Same can be said for Yorkshire. Leeds, sheff Wednesday and sheff united are all big enough for regular top flight football if they get their arses into gear.

I think you can look at a number of the Midlands clubs and point at chronic mismanagement a la Swales as one of a number of reasons why it is not as well represented as it could/should be.

In 1982 I was young, good looking, fashionable and had lots of spare cash...
Yes - 1982 was that long ago. We were huge in the early 70's. It matters not. Villa fans are completely & totally deluded to where they are today.

Not sure this is correct anymore TGR. Four or five years ago, yes, they did have delusions of grandeur. I think your average Villa fan accepts their place in the world these days.

The post-O'Neil era has been a sobering one for them.
