Football league teams City have never played in our history

I remember for the cup tie at Vale Park early 90s (?) It was said we had not played them in a competitive fixture. In the late 90s we played them several times at 2nd level. In 98 99 they were a division above us.
We'd played them four times in the league before the FA Cup game in 90-91. It was our first domestic cup tie against them.

What's all this nonsense about never having played Bristol City?

I can remember City drawing 2-2 with Bristol City at Maine Road in 1965. Ralph Brand scored one of his two goals for City. I also remember going to a 1-1 draw in the return match that season at Ashton Gate.
You saw Ralph Brand score! Another saviour who didn’t quite fit the bill.
My claim to fame is I saw Gerry Creaney score an away goal at Elland Road.

Was sent an article from the Guardian (yeah I know) that listed teams who had never played each other either in league games only, or in any domestic competition including the cups
They ranked them by the combined number of league seasons in their respective histories
It turns out that City v Exeter City is joint third on the all time list
  • 217 Manchester United (123) v Gillingham (94), Manchester City (123) v Exeter City (94)
Top is Everton and West Brom, both v Rochdale (222 combined league seasons)

In terms of clubs who’ve never faced each other in league games only, City v Rochdale is joint 18th on the list at 217 seasons (City 122, Rochdale 95)

Top of this list is Everton v Walsall (231 combined seasons)

In fact we’ve only played Dale once ever in a competitive game, a League Cup tie in Sept 1972 (won 4-0)

Of course this doesn’t take into account clubs who we’ve never faced and which have only come into the league more recently, with the advent of promotion from the conference/national league. So the likes of Bromley, Harrogate, Crawley, Stevenage, Fleetwood etc

We’ve faced Barnet, Burton, Barrow, Accrington in cup ties

There are also teams that we have played but not very often - Bristol City being one that springs to mind
I went to the Dale game in second half DGR for a laugh went in the stand between the Northstand (now seated) and Kippax and started chanting Rochdale coppers bottled it and I got a good slapping off a big daft Sargent and thrown down the back stairs
The bastard ripped my brand new football jumper I’d just Stolen from Ivor’s

Went to a Bristol City v City game at Ashton Gate back in the early 80's, i'm pretty sure we lost

Went Exeter City when we played them in a pre season friendly early 90’s night match, was a top laugh.
That Bath Twerton Park v The Gas(Bristol Rovers) was also a hoot. Was the one when stadium announcer on a substitution called Garry Flitcroft Garry FLIPFLOP!!

I have seen us play Bristol City 3 times recently and missed the away semi, we have played them loads.

When did we play Accy Stanley? Are you counting the lancashire FA Cup, Senior Cup or Youth Cup?

You are spreading poor info.
If people are too fucking thick to read properly then that’s their problem

We played Accrington in the FA Cup in 1937, as even a short look at the history section of this website shows

The information wasn’t poor at all. Just the brains of some of the people trying to read it

I noticed that the OP didn’t give a link to the article. I would be very surprised if the Guardian made an error so I am sceptical if the stuff about Bristol City was ever published.

Remember us playing Bristol City in the (I think) 1977-78 season in Division 1.

I also remember us playing Exeter City away in the League Cup under Kendall (unless my mind is playing tricks!).

Only one City though!
It’s rare that I feel qualified to debate anything on here, but I feel suitably emboldened on the subject of Exeter City! Having grown up there and having made countless trips to St James Park, I spent my whole childhood dreaming of drawing (Manchester) City in one of the cups, so I could see Franny and Colin the King in the flesh, but it never happened. The closest we ever got was a pre-season friendly ahead of the 96/97 season…..

Learn to read FFS

Yeah we’ve only played them 26 times lol
Indeed if I was to pick a team that City had rarely played, I would not have gone for Bristol City. I would suspect that City have played against them far more often than a majority of EFL teams.
