i was an 80s city child and started watching city in 86 and my biggest memory as i wasnt allowed to the 5-1 was our 2 year war with crystal palace starring deakin the ref, redmond and gleghorn the goalies, nixon the boxer, wright and bright acting up,coin throwing, police escorts for officials, 8k palace fans going wild as wright scored past gleghorn, the kippax going wild after nixons red card, proper hostile for a 9 year old

your memories?

Ist post

S/T Holder from 1976 to 2008 and I can assure you that Palace have never brought anywhere near 8k to City, the game you mentioned finished 1-1 in our 88/89 promotion season, Palace brought around 1500, 2000 tops

Was going to say that....I was at that game and no chance Palace had that many. 2k is being kind.

just watched on youtube, its the narrow camera and fact i was 10, probably got mixed up with our ass-raping off chelsea

Born in '82. First season my Dad took me to was 1988-89, promotion season. First game was our 4-2 win over Leicester - the game where Roy Bailey ran on to help out Paul Lake whose tongue had blocked his airway (that game is on YouTube). First away game was the hammering at Ewood on my 7th birthday and remember the drive home on hearing the Hillsborough news was a strange one.

Remember the Bournmouth game well. 3-0 up at half-time and we were going up, only for us to throw it away and draw 3-3 (Gary McAlister and Ian Bishop?).

Then that great game at Bradford - MORLEY!

First ever derby game was the 5-1 in September '89.

My first World Cup memories was Italia '90. Great tournament.

Am I right in thinking that in the 'Lakey's tongue' game Morely scored a hat-trick? Seem to recall arguing with a mate who insisted Morely was rubbish and ended up watching him eat humble pie (but still claiming he was rubbish and the goals were a fluke) :))))

How come Paul Dickov has legendary status for THAT goal at Wembley, but Trevor Morley who scored THAT goal at Bradford as well as a goal in the 5-1 (23 years tomorrow) never gets a mention?
23 years. Fuck me.

As to Morley it's a good point. Another goal where Martin Tyler's commentary is etched into our club's history, along with the 10-1.

I would say it was because the Dickov goal had a few more contextual factors making it a bigger game (even though it was a division below the Bradford game) and personally for me it evoked stronger memories than even seeing Morley, Melrose et al. perform their heroics.

We had spent several seasons up and down in the 80s, but the 90s dip was our lowest ebb ever. It was like the build up to the end of a Rocky film - after scrapping as hard as we could, we still couldn't quite clinch automatic promotion. This was our final shot as it were - and just a couple of minutes prior it had looked like it was all over, not just for the season, but as we have subsequently found out, losing could have had a much deeper impact on our future than even we realised at the time. We were on the verge of losing everything, and after a 'Typical City' plucky equaliser too little too late, took one final throw of the dice.

The stage was set as Goater's shot was blocked and scuffed into Dickov's path leaving him one-one-one with his own best man, Vince Bartram. It was going to be heartbreak for somebody, and having seen him waste a very similar opportunity earlier in the game (sat on the front row looking right along their 18 yard line), I thought it was going over as the ball rose and rose...

...and rose into the roof of the net.

This was the moment when Adrian yells out Rocky's name, time slows down and Hogan's hand begins to flutter to show that he is about to come back from the dead.

I love every one of these episodes and cherish the people who contributed to them, but for me, this and Aguerooooooo have the edge for pure pivotal, world-changing pathos and as such are talked about much more frequently in terms of legendary status.

Saw him in Gerry Gow's testimonial over the summer, he can still play a bit. At one point there were two Eric Nixon's, this was not due to the, too many, beers in the sun nor his "slightly" fuller figure nowadays. In fact his son, Eric came on to join him in full kit and they kept goal in tandem, very funny.
