Forgotten words from Yesteryear

Street parking fee request around Maine Rd - "Can I mind your car?"
I do remember years back a scruffy street urchin 2/3 roads away from Maine Road approaching a guy in a posh estate car with this request. The toff replied "Piss off sonny - don't need you - I've got a big German shepherd in the back" Said urchin responded "Does he put out fires boss?"

Wasn’t sure where to ask this, but where else other than a thread about FOCs and their memories!!

Recently read this in a respected news outlet:

“Yet he felt he had no choice but to try and lead by example.”

Am I wrong, old, deluded, or right in thinking the word “and” should be “to”???

Help, I’m an FOC and I think I may have been left behind by the world!

Could be either or mate in my opinion. He’s going to try to lead or his is going to try and also by example lead
