Former Referees's pretty shocking claim (Aguero related)

Taking a step back from the Halsey comments and the rights and wrongs of the Aguero incident, it is just pure logic that the refs are corrupt.
A quick look /google at the history of corruption in sport shows a strong link between sports that are awash with money and organised criminal gambling. Surely the amount of dosh swilling round the EPL will attract the attention of these criminals?
Again logic would suggest that the weakness in the league for criminals to exploit is not the players who already earn a fortune, or the managers who have to keep winning to stay employed. The ideal candidates for bribary, intimidation ect are the refs. They are paid a comparative pittance and have the ability to steer the course of the game, safe in the knowledge that even ridiculous decisions or oversights will be put down to human error, or subjectivity which is part of the game.
They can also depend on being defended to the hilt in this respect by the FA and their own organisation.
Just ask yourself the question, if you were a gangster interested in influencing the outcome of premier league matches who would you lean on?
For me its simply a question of if you believe there is corruption. If there is then it has to be the refs.

We've all seen some of the decisions given against us in the CL, they had corruption written all over them and not for one moment did/do I think it came from gangsters

Was listening to TalkSPORT earlier ...(I know, but there was nothing on tele and I was waiting for the England match to start)... and those two Mike di'keds were doing a saint and sinner of the week slot. Surprise, surprise, sinner of the week was chosen to be Mark Halsey for his audacity to provide unsubstantiated claims of corruption within football.

The whitewash has started.

so let me get this right,,,at the end of a refs career a £50,000 carrot is dangled in front of them on the grounds they sign a ''gagging order'' which prevents them ''legally'' from disclosing information, this same gagging order Mark Halsey refused to sign and in return lost out on 50k, if their not bent in any way why have gagging orders is my question, this whole thing is starting to stink IMO
Starting to stink....?
It's been stinking for years and I for one am Fucking sick of it.
Wish some dozy folk would wake the fuck up.

Don't be stupid.
It's not just the refs.
Why do you think football attracts billionaire gangsters to "the beautiful game"
If it it was just the refs why is the manager of a team currently in the top four facing match fixing allegations in another country, and not a word is said about it in the press? You can't tell me that it isn't of interest to football fans in this country that a top manager is currently under investigation for fixing the outcome of top class matches?? Just what is preventing this sensational news being reported? Why isn't the designer manager asked to step down, until his name is clear.why was he given a multi million pound contract to manage a team in the premiership with such a stink around his name in his home country?

I don't think Halsey's comments are quite as cut and dried as people are reading them to be.

The likelihood is that, in a particular instance where a referee has seen an incident but the TV camera footage has revealed that he made the wrong decision, and that a particular player should have been either cautioned or sent off, PGMOL might advise a referee to "make amendments" to his report so that the player in question receives the correct punishment.

But this has clearly opened a huge can of worms about how much pressure PGMOL applies to referees who have failed to make a correct decision. I imagine it will eventually result in video referees/TV umpires a few years down the line just to brush any suspicion under the carpet, but for now it'll generate a few column inches.

Yeah it's all hunky dory. Move along, nothing to see here.

That's not what I was saying at all. A can of worms can't be opened if it's all hunky dory.

I just don't think PGMOL phone up referees after games and offer them bribes if they make sure certain players are banned for certain fixtures. Goals on Sunday just pulled three examples of complicated retrospective decisions and they involved players from Blackburn, Everton and Swansea, who aren't exactly important to Sky Sports' soap opera, so I doubt Halsey's statements are going to suddenly lead to widespread investigations and mass exposure of corruption that leads all the way to Greg Dyke or whoever.

It opens a can of worms and I imagine we'll finally have video decisions for penalties, fouls and things that the referee can't see, or this could lead to the corruption that certain people seem so sure about, but football fans struggle with diplomacy or sensibility when it comes to referees, so it'll be fun to watch either way.
