It's just incredibly frustrating when you're trying to post something and by the time you've succeeded, you're a candidate for a Titanic picture! Couldn't even get past the login page for a period tonight. Every time I clicked on ''Log In'' I just kept getting re-directed (eventually) back to the log in page. Will this happen every time we're ''news'', away from match days?
I appreciate how frustrating it is, and can only apologise for that.
As for this happening every time we're "news", unexpected spikes in traffic will cause problems I'm afraid. However, it was a major news story tonight and the site didn't go down as such - it just ran really slowly but was fixed within half an hour. Not ideal I know, but still a significant improvement on the previous server. We can handle greater numbers online now.
As mentioned, when we know something is going to happen, such as an imminent signing or a match, we can increase server capacity. When something unexpected happens, like tonight, we have to respond accordingly and do it as quickly as possible.

-- Tue Jul 05, 2011 1:57 am --

or would the site struggle under the strain of having the extra load or summit technical?
Yes, the cost of running at increased capacity is huge, and doing it permanently just doesn't make sense as it's not required 99% of the time.
