Forward With Franny

In fairness to the Franny bashers, (and he was well in it for a quick buck without putting a lot in imo - although I do think he was/is blue too), it comes to something when Harry Basset is waking up at 4 in the morning and pulling the plug on managing your club cos he has spent all night in a cold sweat.

Brian Kidd bottled it too. Franny rang him and gave him a gobfull for not resigning at old trafford and he changed his mind.

Actually, he'd have been as bad as frank Clark to be fair though.

Where did phil Neal end up? Barrow in Furness or somewhere?

Bassett and his wife were at Maine Road the next year and he was quoted as her saying to him,''How on earth could you turn all this down??'' and he agreed he must have been mad to.

Another reason why you should never listen to the wife.

She was talking bollocks and Bassett dodged a bullet.

I remember protesting outside the Maine Stand after a match. In my youthful naivety I bought into the Forward with Franny campaign. I had one of the badges that were distributed by the Mirror, I think it's still in a draw in my old bedroom at my parents house.

I think the poster who said that there was a mindset of anyone except Swales was correct. That the person wanting to take over was a club legend made it a potent mix.

It's mad to think now that someone who'd made a few million could buy a Premier League club. Today you need to be worth hundreds of millions at least.

Yeah, me too. I remember g at the time there wasn't actually THAT many people who turned up I expected much more.

Didn't stop the fucking Sun giving out posters and plastic hats emblazoned with "Forward with Franny". Leeches.

It was the Mirror that fronted the campaign in the press, not The Sun.

The Mirror effectively 'bought' the campaign by handing out banners and placards with their logo on. They therefore had exclusive rights to the pictures as no other paper would print them.
The S*n did however hand out stickers with ''Don't Save The Swales'' on them!

I recently listened to BBC Radio Manchester's In the Spotlight, or whatever it's called interview between Franny and Cheesy.

In it Franny said that the removal of the rubble from the Kippax should have cost £1 / tonne, but ended up costing £28 because it was toxic.

That's a hell of a lot of money taken out of your budget for transfers or whatever.

Also, he said that he had a manager lined up to take over from Horton, but he suddenly decided he didn't want the job, which left very little time to bring in a replacement.

There is no doubt that FHL made mistakes, but considering the state the club was in, I don't think anybody would have done a better job, at least in the short term.

I'm not surprised, I'm convinced those bogs at the back of the Kippax never drained into any sewerage system!

We almost invited/wellcomed another ex player to bail us out after Franny.
When it looked like Ray Ranson would come on board.
Fortunatley it was Coventry, and now they are homeless and in administration.
Thank you Sheilk.

Only took part in a couple of post match demonstrations. Was really excited when Franny eventually took over. Think the first thing he did was to put in a corporate hospitality restaurant in the Main Stand. I remember listening in to Steve Penk at 06.00 on Piccadilly Radio (I think) and being gutted that George Graham had turned us down.

These young uns don't know how lucky they are arguing over which world class player to sign next. The dross we had to put up with signing in those days, kinkladze apart that is. I actually remember before we signed kinky we were in the running to sign a young Luis Figo. Unfortunately the silly sod chose Barcelona.
