France to play in Euro 2016 Qualifying

Good idea but do not feature Clichy, Nasri or Mangala in case of injury ;)

what a ridiculous idea

Why?

because it makes what should be a competitive game non-competitive.....

defeats the whole purpose of the game doesn't it?

As it stands, the host nation play nothing but ''non competitive games'' for two years anyway, so what is the difference? The advantage I can see is they wont have to travel to South America or to the far east to play a game (because all the other European teams are playing qualifying games).
Plus, for two games in the group stages, the other teams can try something new - or blood new players - against decent competition without it having an effect on points / placing in the group

The next rule change will be for one tournament only all teams have to fight for a final place against the host nation who will have an automatic bye....

That rule will be tried out in the Champions League next season when the rags fail to qualify. That injustice of the greatest team in the world wrongly being denied a place at the top table will be rectified. The final will be at OT too.

And they'll still lose to surprise finalists Skonta Riga...

England can't end up in the 5 team group, so wouldn't have to play against France in any of these friendlies. UEFA has said that the 5 nations with the highest TV revenues will be placed in pots with 6 teams (so as to maximise the money coming into UEFA by making them play 10 competitive games as opposed to 8 competitive games and 2 friendlies with France), these 5 nations are Germany, Italy, England, Spain and Holland.

The way the European nations are "seeded" for Euro qualification is based upon a UEFA calculation done in November every 2 years (so Nov 2013 for Euro 2016 qualifying) where they assign "points" to each game played (in a similar way to how FIFA do it) then only include a percentage of the points, as follows:-

40% of the average points per game, earned in the 2014 World Cup qualifying stage.
40% of the average points per game, earned in the 2012 Euro qualifying stage and final tournament.
20% of the average points per game, earned in the 2010 World Cup qualifying stage and final tournament.

This gives us 6 pots, made up as follows (with France excluded as they will be "added" to the 5 team group)

Pot 1 - Spain, Germany, Holland, Italy, England, Portugal, Greece, Russia, Bosnia & Herzegovina

Pot 2 - Ukraine, Croatia, Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium, Czech Republic, Hungary, Republic of Ireland

Pot 3 - Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey, Slovakia, Israel, Norway, Romania, Austria, Poland

Pot 4 - Armenia, Montenegro, Scotland, Finland, Latvia, Wales, Bulgaria, Estonia, Belarus

Pot 5 - Iceland, Northern Ireland, Albania, Lithuania, Moldova, Macedonia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Cyprus

Pot 6 - Luxembourg, Kazakhstan, Liechtenstein, Faroe Islands, Malta, Andorra, San Marino, Gibraltar

So, Bosnia will be a top seed, yet Switzerland and Belgium (top seeds at the World Cup) will not be!

Potential "group of death" for England would be:-

England
Belgium
Serbia
Montenegro
Albania
Kazakhstan

Easiest group:-

England
Hungary
Israel
Estonia
Cyprus
Gibraltar

Apparently the top 2 sides in each group qualify for the finals, as well as the best 3rd place team out of the 9 groups. The remaining 8 3rd place teams will playoff, with the 4 winners also qualifying. That means, including France, there will be 24 finalists as opposed to the 16 from previous tournaments. If you just take the top 24 seeded sides then that means the likes of Hungary, Slovenia and Israel would make the finals, although in all likelyhood there could well be a pot 4 side that makes the playoffs, and could well make the finals. Scotland will be hoping it's them, but it could be someone like Finland, Armenia or Montenegro. All things considered the additional 8 teams in the finals have hardly added extra quality, and really makes the qualification a formality for the likes of England, even if we "do a MacLaren" and finish 3rd in the group we still get, at worst, to go into a playoff with some truly uninspiring sides.

Really good idea, think it should be the case. It means that rather than play random friendlies against poor teams at odd dates there is a consistent schedule. I hope England do draw France in this case - not sure it will be possible in ranking terms, but if they do it means we will have two opportunities to completely experiment with players, formation etc with nothing at stake. Friendlies in International terms have become somewhat farcical though in recent times. There are normally about 10 substitutions or more, the game is stop start and both teams are under pressure to rest players that are key to their club sides.

In my eyes England should look to put out the strongest 11 in friendlies, but give opportunities to up to three fringe players so that they get a chance to play with quality players. I have never seen the point in throwing players on (like Barkley, or strikers) when the best players are off the field. Doesn't give them an opportunity to impress.

Anyway that's for another day. But I think this system makes sense to be honest.

Still a competitive element to it for the reasons I have stated.

Sorry not good enough reasons. I'm sure teams are more worried about points than ranking.

-- Fri Jan 24, 2014 2:18 pm --

Good ideas for the hosts. Shit for all other teams. Be moaning extra games not needed.
