Francis Lee RIP

Thanks for it all Frannie, even the chairman days when were all over the place. Made us all the more grateful and starry eyed at today’s success, taking us back to the imperious days of you, Colin and Buzzer. So pleased you got to see us back to where we belong. “Terrifying Europe” just a bit later than Malcolm planned. RIP.

I doubt it. He fell out with Lee over his sacking as a youth coach. I'd love to be wrong on this, but sadly I don't think they ever spoke again.

Sad reading that piece from 10 years ago. Bell, Hince and now Lee have all passed away. Very sobering tbh. :(

In the mid-1960s, I watched a number of mid-week matches not involving City at the likes of Stockport, Bury, Oldham, and Bolton.

After winning promotion in 1966 and consolidating in 1967, it was apparent that City lacked a top-class centre forward. Derek Kevan had gone and age was catching up on Jimmy Murray while Ralph Brand never really settled. City even tried Mike Doyle at number 9 for an extended run.

Francis Lee was the obvious choice but Bolton were not prepared to listen to offers. Lee had built up his bog roll business and was financially independent. He basically threaten to go on strike to force through the move to City. Bolton realised he wasn’t bluffing and sanction the transfer to City. The rest is history until Swales appeared to force him out of the club.

When my son was born in 1981, Francis was my choice for a name. My wife was hesitant until I suggested Kazimierz as an alternative. So Francis it was. He is a City supporter to this day despite having lived his life mostly in Edinburgh and now in London.

Sadly another one gone, my most vivid memory of Franny was a game against Derby early seventies we won 4-0 but he missed a penalty at the Platt lane end, me and my friend decided to go right to the front behind the little wall, the ball hit the wall directly in front of me, jesus the power, had it hit me i was ten at the time I'm not sure i would be here now. Condolences to his family and friends.

Loving the last paragraph mate.

A sad time but humour is always needed too.

Franny was the reason I started supporting City as a young kid, having briefly met him a couple of months before the 1969 FA cup final and where he took the time to chat to me. It left a huge impression. An absolute colossus as a player and certainly my hero growing up. So I'm incredibly sad to hear of his passing earlier this afternoon and my sympathy goes out to his family and friends. I owe my support of this club over the past 54 years entirely to him. Rest in peace Franny.

My old man is from Handforth and whenever we’d go past his house towards Style he’d always point it out, as if I didn’t know already. I’m was only 7-8 but remember being awestruck that my nan lived so close to a City legend!

Ha ha. Just posted the same. Was trying to work out the other Golden Boot winners.
Gerd Mūller for sure, maybe Kazi Deyna too

A Bayern/Adidas promo with as you say Gerd Muller and Franny, and then Slobodan Santrac (OFK Belgrade) and Antonis Antoniadis (Panathinaikos).

Just looking through the Getty archive at the pictures they have of Franny, some fantastic photos. The Guardian could easily have picked another dozen.
