Francis Lee

A fantastic player with one of the hardest shots in football. Francis Lee made a huge contribution to a great team.

An indifferent Chairman, in part, I think, because he was rich but not a billionaire. City needed an absolute fortune spending on them after the Swales years of neglect. I'm sure he did his best, although I wish he had not appointed Ball. It's also unfortunate that he and Colin Bell fell out.

I suppose the modern equivalent would be Aguero coming back in 20 years to be Chairman. And then having a fallout with David Silva.

My lad is named after him. Legend along with Messrs Colin Bell and Mike Summerbee. Franny knew how to take a penalty, straight down the crack hit hard. Awesome.
In my opinion he was a fucking brill player for us
From Westhoughton so am i
So he was my hero (and still us)
Fucked up as a chairman
Scored for derby at Maine road
Not seen the picture people are talking about
Hope he is on

I remember being absolutely obsessed with him completing the takeover and reading a quote that “he was no Jack Walker” but I was so chuffed Swales was out and he was in I didn’t realise the significance of it. Once he started buying cheap players to balance the books the writing was on the wall and as others have said the appointment of Alan Ball was a completely foreseeable disaster.

According to Richer than God, a book wrote in 2012 Lee/Barlow and their consortium's plan was to turn City into a PLC then sell the shares, which is exactly what happened. They made quite a good profit from the sale.

In the late 60s/early 70s I had framed photos of Franny and Colin on my bedroom wall. Franny, like Colin, would play in any Pep team. Franny worked his guts out every game. He was part of the England 1970 team - an upgrade on the 66 world cup winning side. Genuine world class.

Take most things that David Conn writes with a pinch of salt. If he had his way we'd still playing the likes of Lincoln & Walsall.
