Remember the impact he made at the '66 world cup - when he was a 20 year old. Certainly a great player and a great captain and that's how he should be remembered. A sad day.

I once asked Johan Cruyff who the best player he played against was and he said Beckenbauer. Says it all for me.

Sad news. What a footballer he was. The only man to have both captained and managed World Cup winning teams as I recall.

Didier Deschamps has done it as well.

Great footballer and manager no doubt. Indeed one of the greatest ever all round footballers. Curiously didn't like heading the ball. Arrogantly refereed games himself from his position of captain of Bayern particularly.

Played the long gone sweeper position for West Germany, seemed to never break sweat, well respected, you could probably say the German Bobby Moore. Less said the better about his antics at Bayern and Fifa as an executive.

I always remember the sweeper role he played and was puzzled to understand how somebody wanted the ball so much at the edge of the box, The English style was the keeper kicking as long and far as possible for the big man upfront.

Pep has turned that role into something very different and Now the Keeper is a sweeper and all the team can take the ball off the keeper.
