Free loft insulation.

Government grants stopped late last year/ early this year. There is no incentive for the companies to do it for free (i.e. free to you). You can still get it if:

You get child tax credit and have an income of £15,860 or less or are receiving certain benefits such as pension credit.

The grants have been replaced by the 'green deal' which is basically a way of paying for it long term:

It's probably cheaper to DIY, just checked Wickes and B&Q and no offers on yet, Wickes had 3 rolls for the price of 1 when I did mine in 2011, it took 4 rolls of 170mm & 4 rolls of 100mm for a 3 bed terrace.

Wait for the DIY sheds to put an offer on this autumn and DIY mate, that's not to say that no-one is doing it for free.

Pretty certain that you can it done with a grant from the energy company and it costs nothing or something? I thought there was a guy on here that was offering it about 6 months back.
There was someone on here offering it a while back and loads took up his offer. I was just being a bit grumpy when i said nothings free. Im sure the power companies claw the money back on our bills.

nothings free rick but i have seen the sales people with their little ladders round the newton heath area.

We had it done "for free" early on this year - its a large roof space and the insulation is now about 18" deep - I have noticed recently that the upstairs in the house is very warm so should be good for the coming winter.

It didn't directly cost me a penny - I said to the guy/sales rep that came round " I'm not being funny mate, but I will not be giving you any cash - is that understood" - the chap was sound - he said "honestly, there is no catch, it will cost you nothing" - and I paid nothing.

But i understand from a couple of people that everybody's gas/electric bills have a surcharge built-in that covers the cost of the "free insulation" - so thankyou fellow bluemooners.

Bloke from Warmfront was offering it on here, but never rang me back.

I got British Gas to do it, you can contact the guy who did it for me on 07789575694 - he's called Bola.

British Gas did mine too ... didn't cost me a penny !

They're pretty strict on insulation over here, an inspector comes by to sign off that you've got the necessary insulation before you can drywall. In this county you have to have R21 in the walls and R48 minimum in the roof which equates to about 16 inches of loft.

That's because American houses are still made using twigs, wattle and daub!
