A repeat of the Messi saga a few summers ago. Barca will dare de Jong to take them to court. They will risk financial ruin for a moment of grandstanding. My guess is de Jong will stay. There will be more levers appearing out of nowhere.

Barca are going to drag this out as long as possible to extract the maximum they can from the, frankly, desperate rags.
Player has made it clear that he does not want to move, yet they arrogantly continue to try to force a move on the premise that they are 'man united', (Yes, the ones the Pontiff has asked about on numerous occasions).
There does not appear to be a 'plan B', as poundshop pep seems to be looking to build his team around a player who does not want to move to them.

I wouldn’t be the slightest bit surprised if the rags actually did this they are desperate to get some sort of statement signing..

Obviously Barca don't want to pay him the 17m but at the same time want €65 minimum from the rags. This will probably end up like Pogbas agent fee, where the rags deny paying the extra 17m for FDJ.

And that's illustrative of their problem; from a football perspective they shouldn't be chasing statement signings. They are short in a number of areas and given the level they are at they don't need to be buying the absolute best there are loads of players who could improve them if they had a coherent identity and plan. They will still get rinsed as clubs know they are desperate.
