And that's illustrative of their problem; from a football perspective they shouldn't be chasing statement signings. They are short in a number of areas and given the level they are at they don't need to be buying the absolute best there are loads of players who could improve them if they had a coherent identity and plan. They will still get rinsed as clubs know they are desperate.
That's true but, and the same time, their worldwide fan base expects them to always have at least one top (or at least, media hype-able) player, a Rooney, a Ronaldo, a Beckham, a Pogba. What they are seeing is other clubs getting the Haalands and the Mbappes and united getting the McTominays. Even Dejong isn't going to cut it as a big name. That is not what they signed up for and they must be haemorrhaging "fans".
