From a new fan...

To any new fan:

Surely you didn't feel the same kind of emotions as us lot did when we won the FA Cup?

Say NO to manufactured support.
Oh for fuck's sake... Yes, Liam, you're City-worshiping cock is bigger than everyone else's. Does that reassure you? Are you in need of more reassurance that you're a bigger and better fan than everyone else? Should we beg Ric et al. to open a forum just for you so people can know far and wide that you shame everyone with your mighty Blueness?

I am one of those who question the mentality of people who suddenly 'choose' to state that they all of a sudden 'support' a successful football team.

However, were I to meet you in Manchester I would be the height of civility and treat you as I treat all human beings that I meet.

I am quite capable of separating the person from an aspect, a single aspect amongst countless facets of their personality, of their make up.

I, as most decent people are, am quite capable of being a warm, friendly, welcoming and decent person, without agreeing completely with everything you do or say.

I cannot get my head around people 'emoting' about a random sports team that people choose to support and then seek to portray that they are hugely emotional about.

I won't be acting like a **** towards such people though, and to suggest that people who hold similar views to my own would, as the above post does, is a bit of a cheap attempt to avoid the basics of that debate imo.

It is quite possible to hold a separate views on sport and an individual's attitude to it and views on that individual as a person. In fact, the unwillingness to accept this is often an aspect of this debate that I find the "massive fans from Singapore are not laughable" camp find difficult to deal with.

Bwahahahahahahahahahahahaha! This has got to be a contender for the WUM of the year award surely? I mean, words like "decent", "friendly", and "civility" being quoted by a poster that shows anything but those traits on here towards people whenever they hold a different view to yours? Pull the other one you clown.

Another intelligent contribution, studiously addressing the points at hand.

Don't get me wrong, when faced with childish, idiotic, pointless contributions like the one above, I will quite happily take the piss.

Perhaps you have confused this reaction with what I refer to above. If that is the usual standard of your contribution then there is a fair possibility that I have took the piss.

However, when faced with someone who has a decent contribution to make, yes, I will be decent to them, no matter who they support or where they are from. From the above though, it's dubious as to whether that applies to you, given the standard of your petty effort.

Oh, let's not pretend, shall we? You're doing very much what you intend to do in this discussion and others similar. It's well done, too. Quite a bit of thought and craft has gone into this.

Yeah, passing an opinion.

A crime, it seems.

No, not at all. But I'm fairly certain you're aware the linguistic choices made in the posts are likely to engender annoyance.

Correction - passing an opinion while constantly acting like a twat in doing so.

Reasonably new Man City fan myself too. Not many games shown on television here in Australia until we got pay so was never going to follow it too closely a few years ago.

When I finally had access I decided that I needed to pick a team to follow (which I know do incredibly closely). In 'Aussie Rules' back home the team I've been a member of for 70% of my life have not won the premiership since 1954 and are historically one of the poorest teams. I wanted to pick a team that was a chance to be successful but wasn't keen on jumping on one of the existing big 4 and so City was a good fit (the club I support here also has moved from their historical home ground to play at our own 60,000 seat Etihad Stadium).

Other reasons were I always thought United were a bunch of wankers (I remember being told how Ferguson threw away a winners medal to the crowd because he had so many, don't even know if that's true, but when you support a team in another code who has gone so long without success you would like a bit more respect from a winner) and I thought Adebeyor's celebration against Arsenal was hilarious.

Travelled last year and managed to see some pretty decent European games but was shattered to be in Italy when we were playing Juventus but in England not in Turin. I understand people may feel a lot of people are simply bandwagon jumping as I have somewhat done but surely any support is good support.

No problems with that mate. Welcome aboard. However please refer to my earlier comments and do not dare fly over to Manchester shortly after we win the premier league and then block my view during the parade as i would be most upset.

Agree with Liam's comments - how much fun really though will it be just picking a team that you have no connection with? Wouldn't you be better following a local team?

I'm also a relatively new fan of the club as well. I have been following local teams in my area (Ottawa, Canada) for a number of years but the quality is poor. I started following La Liga, the Premier League and Serie A games probably in 2008. For whatever reason, my local ESPN affiliate showed mostly Manchester City games and it was the season that Ireland had his break out year with Robinho in the team. I liked SI style and the atmosphere of the team, so I kept watching the games and eventually started liking the team. I went online to learn more about the club and found Bluemoon. It was then that I began to identify with City as my club as I could relate to the self deprecating humor.

Although I live in Ottawa, I was born and raised in Cape Breton, a small island on the east coast of Canada which was a very poor area, but an area world renowned for it's hospitality. We have a welcoming culture and very much a self deprecating sense of humor about ourselves. As a Canadian, the other sports team I support is the Toronto Maple Leafs who have won the 2nd most Cups in NHL history but haven't won anything since 1967. Although the Leafs are one of the richest clubs in the league, they went through a decade long period of bad ownership that saw us become the laughing stock of nation. We could find ways to lose that would mystify. Very much a typical city type mentality and I took loads of abuse about my team from Canadiens fans, who are a team who play in red and have won 26 cups to our 13 so is the NHL's equivalent of the rags.

It was these qualities about the club that drew me from casual observer into being a fan and not the takeover, which is something I found out about only after finding the takeover thread on here a couple of months after joining. I now watch the team religously on TV and I'm planning to make a pilgrimage myself as well. I also thoroughly detest the saying "not good enough for where we are going". Cringeworthy.
